Thanks for this post. I checked my charger and it was the source of intermittent rfi that I could not find.

RE: Warning Notice--Radio Frequency Interference
Case #EB-2004-2568

Dear Mr. (deleted):

On May 26, 2004, the Commission's Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau notified you that it had received complaints that battery chargers at your residence were causing harmful radio interference to an operator in the Amateur Radio Service. The complainant is:

NOTICE REGARDING NON-COMPLIANT BATTERY CHARGERS

The FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology (``OET'') Laboratory has determined that certain vehicle battery chargers manufactured and distributed in the United States by Vector Products, Inc. d/b/a Vector Manufacturing, Ltd. (``Vector'') are not in compliance with the technical standards set forth in Part 15 of the FCC's Rules.

The Enforcement Bureau recently obtained six models of Vector Smart Battery Chargers, Model Nos. VEC086, VEC087, VEC088, VEC090, VEC092 and VEC093, from several different retailers and submitted the devices to the OET Laboratory for testing to determine whether they comply with the Part 15 Rules. All of the devices were labeled as being in compliance with the Part 15 Rules. However, the OET Laboratory tested the devices and determined that all six models significantly exceed the emission limits set forth in Part 15. Because these devices significantly exceed the Part 15 emission limits, they present a serious potential for harmful interference to licensed radio services. ...

Examining the 'sham' that is EMI/RFI compliance by maufacturers of the *new* lightweight switchmode battery chargers.

This 'sham' involves manufacturers classifying their product as a 'Class A Digital Device' and simply meeting the HIGHER limits for EMI rather than the more restrictive 'default' limits for unintentional radiators. Here is a typical "EMC" notice found on a Guest Model 2623 Battery Charger: ...

CC cites homeowners for causing interference to amateur radio

Things aren't all that friendly in one Friendswood, Texas, neighborhood, where a dispute over interference from one couple's battery chargers to a neighboring radio amateur has resulted in an official FCC Citation to the couple.

The December 10 Citation is the latest chapter in a
long-running dispute that FCC Special Counsel Riley Hollingsworth has described as "an unfortunate...

Cortland,
Thanks for the post. That is good information and shows the Commission will enforce the rules to a device such as this. I could not find a type acceptance label on the charger so I am looking into if that makes it exempt. Anybody with info on that let me know..Again Cortland Tnx.. To update the thread: The filter Dewalts technical department suggested from radio shack is being discontinued and is on sale for $2.49. They are originally $29.99. So for the sake of the argument at that price I bought one. I gave it to the neighbor and put a battery in the charger and went home to see what it would do. To no suprise it did not work. The charger splatters harmonics from 4 through 15 mhz at S-8 or greater. The interference is not a conducted type but a radiated type. It is actually transmitting on these frequencies. I have emailed this back to Dewalt and suggested they invest in a Spectrum Analyizer to see what there products are doing. However I do beleive they know exactly what they are doing and expect them to do nothing. If and when I get an answer back I will post the reply. 73s....

UPDATE:
Today I received an email from Dewalts technical support mentioning that they have forwarded my email to the next level of tech support. Its been over a week since I emailed my results to them about there recomendation not working but at least they have not totally ignored me. At this point I do not expect a solution from them as it seems all there chargers create RFI. Again I have asked them for a passive trickle type charger without the active circut. Will see what happens next.. 73s to the group..Scott

UPDATE:
I received a phone call from a Dewalt engineer. He seemed very nice and we talked for about a half hour about the charger and RFI. He is sending me a charger that they have that has sheilding built in to the case. This hopefully will solve the problem. I am glad they did not ignore me and am fairly satisfied with there support as they have tried to help. I will post the results of the new charger when it arrives. Best of 73s to the forum...

I Am Wondering If Its The Charger, Because I Have 6 Dewalt Chargers In My Shack / Office. I Have Not Come Across With A Problem At This Time. I Might Make A Suggestion, Bring The Charger To Your House And Run Its Corse To See If It Is Still There. If It Goes Away You Might Have to Look In Another Direction For A Cure. I Am Going To Put My Chargers To Some Test To See What Happens, I Will Let You Know.

UPDATE: Dewalt Comes through...
Yesterday UPS had a note on my door that they had delivered a box and it was left in the carport. As I looked around the corner I saw 2 large boxes. For some reason they had sent me 2 chargers. These particular chargers beleive it or not have a AM/FM radio built into the charger, or should I say it is a radio with a charger built into it. The charger looks like a big boom box and on the back of it is a compartment the battery goes into. The theory of sending me this charger was that since there is a radio in the charger extra sheilding and filtering was put into it to cure RFI to the radio. Since it is filtered enough for a radio in the charger certainly it is filtered enough for use next door to a HAM. So the neighbor was delighted to get this and right now I am waiting to see if it has any interference to the amatuer spectrum. So far so good. I am really impressed with Dewalt for comming through with a solution and in a big way. I thought for sure they would ignore the compliant, but the engineer called personally and was sincere. So time will tell if this works if it doesnt I will update the post.
So here is a chuckle for you...As I left the neighbor with his new AM/FM radio charger I wondered how long it would be before I would be complaining not about the RFI but him playing the radio too loud .Hi!. I also wonder when he will be knocking on my door telling me I am interfering with his new radio!..
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot HI...73s..
