RFI from Verizon FIOS 48V supply Reply
by WILDPROD on January 2, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
Anyone else here have this problem? I'm going to contact Verizon about it, but was curious if anybody else has dealt with the issue - or has suggestions?

The 48V supply powers up the copper lines and modem -and also charges a 2 hour battery backup. I have wide-band noise in the house - S9 at receiver location from 1000k - 8000k - with some drop-offs here and there. Coming through the house wiring, but more so emmenating from the supply itself.

Thanks guys. U are great.

In all probability, it's the charger that's causing the problem, but I would complain to Verizon. It violates the Part 15 rules.

You might want to check out the power supply that is feeding the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provides. I found that this switching power supply was really noisy, with hash all over the ham bands. I replaced it with a much quieter power supply.

I have the same problem but I found it to be that switching power supply on the actiontek router. I did find noise on a portable receiver at the one you're talking about but the one causing all the noice, s9 if I tune around enough is the power supply on the actiontek router. I'm sure my family doesn't want to hear me complain about this one, they don't care as long as they have their garbage on TV and their internet, does anyone know the specs on this p/s and a good replacement so I can replace it with something better? I have a collection of them here, I'm sure I have something that will work.

The Actiontec uses a 5v 3a power supply. I replaced it by enclosing a Matsushita power supply in a NMEA box and hooking it up to the router. Here is a link to where I bought the power supply.

I have traced the RFI on 7 MHz to the battery charger. It's an RF generator. My goal is to not have RFI and still power the ONT. When A/C is cut from the BBU the ONT apparently receives a control signal and turns off TV and internet after a short time. Does anyone have an idea how I can keep the ONT powered (or fool it) on when the BBU is running on battery? There's an "aux DC" jack on the BBU but I think applying power to that would only keep the "battery mode" extended, not the full-function mode which includes TV and internet. I guess I could apply 12VDC directly to the ONT but if I can avoid messing with the cables too much that would be a good thing.

Don't use your money to fix the problem! It is Verizon's, they opeted for the gamble of using noisy units to save money, let them provide a replacement battery charger on their money. If they get to hard to work with tell the FCC.

Be helpful and cooperative, but let them pay for the fix. That way they own it and you don't run into problems with having "unapproved" equipment in the system.
