Computer LCD Monitor Reply
by KG6WLS on August 20, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Currently, I have an NEC 17" LCD monitor (about 6 years old). 20 meters is practically useless on receive when the monitor is turned on. This monitor is in the same room as my station and the XYL uses the PC quite often.

My question is: What LCD monitor brands out there have you tried/used that produce no hash, etc. on your HF station?

FWIW, this will benefit both the XYL and me. She want's a larger screen for the PC, and I want to be able to work 20 meters without turning off / unplugging the d@mn monitor. :-)

I have both Viewsonic and Samsung monitors in my shack in fact the Samsung is sitting on top of a homebrew tuner which is in a wood box 1 foot from my transceiver with no rfi. Look me up on qrz to see

I would add another positive comment regarding Samsung monitors. I have 3 Samsung monitors in the station as well as a Samsung LCD flatscreen TV and they all co-exist silently with my station equipment.

I've had Samsung, Viewsonic and Acer. None of them have generated any detectable noise or interfering signals on any of the HF bands.

Thanks for the input. How about any of the Dell LCD monitors. Anyone have them in their station location, and is there any interference from the Dell LCD monitors?

There is a vendor here locally that is selling used/ refurbished (mostly Dell) PC's, monitors, laptops, etc. for a good deal. If Dell creates the same problem that I described in my earlier post, I'll plunk out the extra $$ for the Samsung.

Thanks again.

At my previous qth I had a Dell appx. '04 with lcd, no problems noted with my ts-570 less than 3 feet away. I was only listening at the time while working on license upgrade.
Good luck 73

Thanks to all for the input. I ended up getting a 17" Dell LCD monitor. No more issues on RX. :)

Before spending a lot of money on a new monitor that may do the exact same thing, try changing the refresh rate on your old monitor. Good luck.

::That was one of the first things that I tried. Zilch, zip, nada...

The 17" Dell monitor that I picked up for $75 used works FB. Thanks again to all.
