It is my understanding that this is the next "major" AMSAT bird set for launch?
Any info on likely dates and preferred modes??

Had to go to AMSAT-DL to get any information. (Sure speaks well fo AMSAT-USA).
Launch scheduled mid-2007.
Stated to be a test platform for P5/MARS SAT 2009.
PE3 - from the site:
Downlink bands: 145MHz, 2400MHz, 10.45/24/47GHz.
Uplink bands: 435MHz, 1268MHz, 2450MHz, 5.67GHz.
150 KG satellite will have its own thruster to bring it up to its final orbit. At a maximum orbital altitude of at least 35,000 KM, it will enable radio contacts for many hours over distances of nearly 18,000 KM on Earth.
****************
Unknown if P3E will have FM repeater mode.
If launch is only three months away you would think the frequencies/modes would be established since "exstensive testing has taken place Spring of 2007".
I wonder if P3E has been delayed - you would think that if a mid-2007 flight is close there would be a big buzz in HAMdom/AMSAT - but its quite. Even the shgort lived under powered space suites from ISS had more buzz.

Hi!
Phase 3 Express is being built by AMSAT-DL, with contributions (hardware, know-how, and $$$) from AMSAT-NA and others around the world. It has had several scheduled launch dates, all scrubbed due to a variety of issues. The best estimate I've heard is "sometime in 2008 or maybe 2009". That's why you haven't heard much about it... the Germans still need to know a launch date to prepare for. IIRC it will be launched from French Guiana.
Although the SSB/CW transponders could pass FM signals (not nearly as many as SSB or CW signals with their smaller bandwidths), this satellite - and the later AMSAT Eagle - will *not* be used for FM work.

Went by the Dayton AMSAT booth to get P3E info. They are totally in the dark - they just gave AMSAT-DL a bunch of $$$, but got no info in return. The DL site still has P3E launching this summer - but "all" said this is a total error. Seems that DL is afraid of being held to a date. Since they already stated a season/year of launch they look foolish (or negligent) for not updating PE3 plans to their $$$ contributors.
Overall - AMSAT (the world) is doing a miserable job of PR (even booth workers agreed). But they always want money reminds me of hte NRA/ARRL. I complained about the lack of "newbie HOW-TO-get-started SAT project files/articles" on the US web site (all the old stuff has disappeared) it went on deaf ears.
I'm not sure what it is "within" AMSAT - arrogance, ignorance, or vanity; but if they want member$hip$ they need to provide more than lip service.
Now I'll get slammed that they all are unpaid volunteers - save some money - keep the web site volunteer home to update the web site - it might get you a more members than rubbing palms at Dayton and providing no NO information.
