homebrew eggbeater update Reply

In an earlier post, "I built something that actually WORKS!", I talked about how I homebrewed an eggbeater and was testing it. I've been working it pretty hard looking to see what it is capable of.

From what I can gather it is actually a pretty efficient dual-bander. I have hit VHF repeaters in my area, a couple of them are 25+ miles away, and one is closer to 40 miles across a mountain. Of course that one is pretty garbled, but I can recognize the call sign. I can hit these repeaters and make contacts with a good signal, all with an SWR of about 1.5 - 2.
Not too bad.

As for satellites, I have been messing around with AO-51 all morning and can get a very distinct downlink signal on 435.300, although due to the doppler effect it actually begins at about 435.350. Very loud signal, can hear calls very well, got 3 bars on my meter.

I guess that means my project is a success, which amazes me to no end. If anybody wants detailed instructions or a parts list, please let me know. I will be happy to share the knowledge I have gained.

Jeffrey,

very nice work, thanks for posting your success. it has been a while since I used amateur satellites (RS-12 and RS-10 that did not require much equipment). it would be an interesting test to see if your eggbeater also works well with horizontal polarization (hint with SSB like the spring vhf contest).

73, curt
