Power needed to hit FM satellites Reply

My 2m HT puts out only 2 watts, so I figure I'll need a brick of some sort.

If I'm using an eggbeater antenna, how much power is recommended? 35w? 50w?

For satellites you use as little as you need.

For instance on Oscar 40 which is 59,000 kilometer away I can use as little as 5 watts!

On UO14 I have used an HT with a beam antenna without difficulty. FOr satellites it is all about ERP not just power into the antenna. If I have a vertical with 0dBd of gain and put 50 watts into it my ERP is 50Watts. If I put 5 watts into a beam with 128dBd of gain I get 80watts of ERP. See the the difference.

That was the theory behind but in the real world on UO14 there are a lot of lids running as much power as they can muster on US passes. They do this so they can control the sat. So I would say if you expect to work UO14 ensure you have max. ERP.

I've worked Oscar 14 with two handhelds, using only Diamond replacement whip antennas, not the original rubber duck antennas. And although I THOUGHT I was using the 12V/5W battery pack, it turned out I was using the 7.2V/2.5W battery on the uplink 2M H-T. You DON'T need a lot of power! A little more that I was using would probably give a bit of an advantage, though. (And that was during a pass over North County San Diego, not out in the "boonies.")

To the JN station:

No offense, but I detect a typographical error. A beam with 128 dB gain? Now THAT would be a LONG Yagi! (LOL!)
(And don't worry; I mean no disrespect; we all can and do make mistakes, and they can slip through in our posts. I admit to that myself; after all, even if we are Hams, we're still human!)
I don't think my software will even model that much gain. I suspect you meant a more likely 12 dB gain.
