QRZ Troll Killer! Good idea for eHam?

I'd like to congratulate Fred, AA7BQ, on instituting a new troll banning rule at QRZ.com intended to prevent thread hijacking by idiots. First offense = 90 day ban, second offense = permanent ban.
Could we do that on eHam???? It is just sickening to see the responses to eHam articles, speak-out topics, etc., turn into barroom brawls all too often. After the first few posts, there is always somebody (usually from a select small group of known trolls) who has to trash the author, blame it all on no-coders or CB'ers, or just effectively changes the subject to personal insult and flame wars.
I for one am completely fed up with that crap. It has become very difficult to find a ham forum where trolls don't dominate discussion. Most of the articles and other topics here are quite worthy, with very few intended to "stir things up". It is simply a waste of time to try to dig out constructive comments from the wasteland of multiple response pages after one or more of our own eHam pet trolls gets done with their gang grafitti (no names, or calls needed - we know who they are).
How about the ownership of this web site should consider putting a troll-killer rule into effect here?
Comments please, including from the trolls, of course?
Terry, K4IQT

I think we have more of our own varieties here already. Troll posts are kind of like QRM - after it reaches a high level it's hard to do any real communication through it. And trolls seem to breed more trolls when people respond in kind to their noises.
But it's probably true that when the QRM increases from that coming migration, we won't stand a chance unless we have a similar rule.

All very excellent posts by everyone. I agree something needs to be done here. Now that QRZ has started to limit the hijacking, they will make their way here. There are some who were banned from QRZ long ago who are making trouble here now. However, just the mere suggestion of doing something about the hijacking and flooding of threads with bickering and childish behavior, all unrelated to the threads subject matter, will bring about the old knee-jerk reaction of 'freedom of speech'.

I can understand your frustrations with problem posters. I do not like them either. As always if you send me/us URL's to look at and the posts/or posters we are always interested in who is causing problems.
We here at eham know that our forum and comments sections could use some updating and new tools that would make them better and more user friendly in so many ways. We know we are in need of some tools that would also make it easier for users and admins to report and track abuse. To that end we are actively working on some updates to these areas of the site. Since this project is still in the early stages I really do not have an idea of when you will start to see changes here on the live site but they will happen. And I more than any of you would like to see it happen very soon.

Thank you very much K5TR! I may have been in the wrong place or missed them, but this is the first post from one of the Eham staff that I have ever noticed soon after it was posted, and I want you to know that I appreciate it very much! I am sure you have your hands full, and I thank you for taking this time. It was frustrating thinking that no one knew and no one cared that these problem posters were growing more active and bold. Maybe a few who now realize that they may be some of the ones being watched might find a way to act more civil,,:) Thanks again and good luck.

The most effective and labor free thing to do is to rig the site so each person can only post one comment per subject. That would stop the arguements, improve the quality of the posts and it would be fair to everyone!

How about developing a code of conduct that must be read and agreed to before each posting is made? It can be written in a positive way but includes a clause at the end that outlines penalties for violating the code to discourage troll type posts. I still read and enjoy eham but the troll posts do not reflect well on our hobby. I only hope that new hams or potential hams are not put off by those types of postings.

Who is going to write all these rules and who is going to enforce it? Too much work with all the multiple threads on this site and in the end, it could be unfair.
The problem is inane multiple posts by hams that really have nothing informative to add, but enjoy annoying others. One post per issue would solve all of that and raise the quality of the posts. If you only get one, you will make it your best! It would also make it easier to police, if necessary.
Hams that want to carry on long conversations on a subject can give their e-mail addresses or cell phone numbers to each other, just like they were on the air.
