Are the eHam.net servers in California? I figure from the time stamp on messages they are on the west coast somewhere. But between about 1 and 3AM west coast time every day, they seem to get extremely slow for a while - is this due to some routine backing up, maintenance, or what?

Yes the servers are on the west coast of the USA.
There are several things that happen at 2am that do put a load on the machines. This is one of our lowest traffic times. I have been wanting to rearrange how some of that maintenance happens so that it does not impact the user experience. You (as far as I know) are the first person to ever say anything about it. I would have to go look but I know there is going to be one day of the week that is much worse than the others with the current setup.
We are currently working on some upgrades that we hope to roll out very soon that might lessen or maybe eliminate the impact on the user. I really will not know how it will change things until I get the new system under real user loads.
I am sorry about the problem. I will look at the things we are doing during that time - perhaps I can spread them out in a different way that will lessen their impact. If I find some changes I will try to let you know so you can tell me if things change for the better.
Thanks
George

George,
Many thanks for the answer. It's not much of a problem, just a bit irritating - it means I go to other sites to look at other things while it's happening. Being over here of course, it happens between 7 and maybe 10am when it happens!
Some days are worse than others, I notice, but I haven't made a note of which ones.

I stay up late and have noticed the same thing, so I try to avoid the site between 1 and 3 AM Pacific time. The site becomes completely unresponsive at times. Unfortunately, that's kind of my prime surf-the-net time.
