OMG! A Zero rating! Quick let's post some 5's! Reply

I get a chuckle out of some members who just can't seem to get past somebody posting what they really think of a rig. Prompting several to post a flurry of 5 ratings to "politely" call the guy an idiot who didn't know what he was talking about. These normally are made within the very first hour of the negative ratings.

Today's example is in the reviews of the Yaesu FT-817. A gentleman called it a "lemon" and gave it a zero. At last count he generated 4 rebuttals, all posting 5 ratings.

eham reviews are almost meaningless.

Some things with known problems are given the highest ratings.

I also notice one pissed off guy can post negative reviews over and over again under a different "user name".

eham reviews are about like ebay feedback.

This is not unique to eHam. One should be suspicious of all online "user" reviews. They are useful, however, if you read them intelligently - like for spotting a trend in the complaints.

A valid point regarding the in-validity of numerical ratings.

How many times have we seen antenna comments with things like "Tune 1:1 across the band!" and "I can work everything that I hear" (of which I will admit I have been guilty at one time in my history as a ham.

The best way is to see how many hams are buying the product and not returning it - that's one good indicator.

Another is the way that the product is used. If someone gave a ZERO, why was that given? Frustration with the menus or small display (rig)? Narrow bandwidth (yagi)? Won't tune a piece of bed coil (tuner)? The detailed comments and analysis mean more to me than anything else.

If the guy is lucky, those "rebuttal" reviews are all that he got. More than once I have posted a less than glowing review of a rig and ended up getting nasty emails from guys who felt that the rig was one of the best ever made and informed me of my lack of intelligence and expressed their doubts about my ancestry being human :-)

Antenna reviews are probably the least reliable of all. Many are posted by folks who either never had anything before or have been moving up(?) from something crude. So yes, they report a great improvement over their Hustler mobile antenna mounted on the window sill. I have real question about "I can work anything I can hear." I think what they often mean is, "I can work anyone who answers me when I call them." Might as well hook up to a lawn chair on a stick or the electric fence and report that it works or that I worked DX with it. You have a truly miserable product when you can't collect some good reviews. A dummy load with a wire lead hanging out will get some good reviews. We know, because we've seen them for what amounts to exactly that.

Radio reviews have some value. Consistent reports of some performance issue actually compared with other radios pretty reliably reflect performance in that area. But it takes a pretty elaborate analysis for a review to have any value in overall comparison.

And if there's one area where manufacturers and retailers should pay attention to their reviews, it's in after-sale service and accessibility. You can sell a lot of plain junk, if you just respond to customers and do it without being abusive.

I think we should be allowed to rate the technical accuracy of some of the "advice" given in the fora.

If some of the "self-endorsed experts" receive enough zeroes, it might help reduce some of the BS advice.

Man forget the product reviews. I wish Tom, and those people of his ilk/tech knowledge would post more, and write more articles on antenna systems. These guys don't get the credit they deserve here.

I wish they would pay them something for their work.

Terry, good idea.

It would be nice to have a "consumer reports" type of information source that accepts no advertising.

I'd listen to everything Tom says.

BTW, congrats on the new vanity. Why the change?

Thanks.

It was the "5" call I wanted.

I've learned more about antenna systems from Tom-W8JI by his website, and his answers to others, and his comments than most any other source. That he is as generous with his knowledge as he is, says a lot.
