Good posts here, and good advice. Let me add just one point.
Do NOT use a transformer-type balun to convert from the twin lead to the coax. The impedance of the G5RV on all bands except 20 Meters varies all over the place, and is highly reactive on most bands. Transformer-type baluns will have high loss under such conditions. It's ok (actually it's probably a good idea) to use a choke balun. That's the kind that consists of a number of ferrite beads slipped over the outside of the coax. Otherwise, just connect the twin lead directly to the coax.

If you run the twin-lead/ladder line all the way back to the tuner, the antenna is no longer a G5RV, but some sort of double zepp, and you lose the transformation of the twin lead. Yes coax is lossier with high swr, but the swr isn't that high on the coax if the transformer section is the proper length.
In some cases you may even be able to get by with the internal tuner of the newer radios, or the output tuning circuits of the tube radios.
