I am getting ready to put up a Hustler 6-BTV trap vertical antenna. I plan on using ground radials, in the instructions it states to cut the radials a certain length for each band. I have read in other vertical applications that the radials should all be the same length. Which is right? Has anybody else used this antenna with ground radial? How did it work for you?

The 6-BTV is a 1/4 wave vertical antenna - SO the radials are a required portion fo the overall antenna. Follow the manufacturer's directions.

If it's mounted on the ground, with the radials on or just below the surface of the earth, their length is not critical. The more you have, and longer they are will improve efficiency however. If the antenna is elevated like on a roof or mast mount, then your radials need to be a quarter wavelength for the bands of interest. Three or four per band is adequate for elevated verticals.

If you are going to have fewer than around 20 buried radials (I can't specifically recall the number), then keeping them shorter is better for coupling to earth ground. 8 radials that are 60 feet long will not be better than 16 radials that are 20 feet long.
It has to do with the distance between the ends of the radial wires. A closer distance between them is better.
The ARRL Antenna Book documents this with gain/loss figures.

See the eHam "Product Reviews" to see how others have liked and mounted the 6BTV.

I used a 4btv with the 80-meter trap on top for a long time, a long time ago, mounted on the roof.
The radials do indeed need to be 1/4 wavelength. I used two per band. Also, the angle between the vertical antenna and the radials is critical. At first, I just did what worked on the roof, and the VSWR was really high. I then raised the base of the 4-btv up off the roof enough to get the required angle, and it was very nice after that!
