Hi, I just received my VX-5R. This is my first radio. I also just got my ticket on Friday.

Last night I try to transmit and no one was replying. I didn't fix up any PL etc. How do I do this? How do I key up to a repeater with the VX-5R. I don't have the repeater directory, where else can I get information on nearby repeaters?

In order for me to transmit, do I have to key up to a repeater?

The best bet would be to contact another ham in your local
area and find out what the repeater frequencies and PL tones required for them are. I assume that you've joined
the local ham club or repeater association - you should find someone to help you there. You could always give a call on 146.52 and see if you can contact anyone there too. Good Luck!

The VX-5R was my first radio, I think it's a great radio! I also just received my ticket in the end of June. I suggest ordering the ARRL repeater directory from www.arrl.org or www.aesham.com for $8. Not only will it get you started, it comes in real handy!(the vx-5 can always scan for the PL, just read the manual)
