UPDATE-Temporary Mast Setup for HexBeam Reply

For info purposes only. After posting for help for ideas to install a temporary winter mast for Hexbeam (posted 30 Sept 07) I went ahead and set up HexBeam on a mast at a height of 33ft utilizing both the advise and products of Charles of Penninger Radio. Setup consists of the Penninger Tipper tripod bolted onto a heavily weighted wooden pallet. Mast used consists of Penninger Snap Tubes (5 six ft tube sections joined together by special adapters). This mast is rotated at base by means of Yeasu G-1000DXA rotor (rotor attached in line first onto 3ft tube that is part of Tipper tripod and then fastened to the 30ft Snap Tube mast to rotate entire Mast). Rotating mast is guyed at middle and top of mast. 4 guy lines are used at both guy location. Two Yeasu GS-065 Thrust Bearings were used as the guy slip ring attachment points to allow mast to rotate within these guy points. Atop the mast sits the 5 band Hexbeam.

So far so good. It has survived one severe ice storm, 2 or 3 big snow/wind storms and -20C/-3F degree weather. Rotor rotates mast with no problems. Lots of great DX contacts with HexBeam.

Only problem encountered was during installation when myself and two neighbours walked up the mast into position. At first I had 6 tubes (total 36ft plus 3ft tripod post) and the mast flex, even with aid of long pole to push/walk up mast, was too scarry. Removed 1 tube and then had no problem.

To get a better idea of what I'm trying to explain check out the Penninger Radio web site for view of the products I've used or send me an email at garyvsmithL134@msn.com for some pictures.

To get the mast higher than the 33' you have to add sections from the bottom up. You put tension on a pair of guy wires to stabilize things leaning the mast slightly to one side as you add sections. It is possible to put up the entire mast with one person. But, more is better.
