VHF-UHF All Mode? Reply
by KC4KMG on April 16, 2005 Mail this to a friend!
Ok...if a person wanted to get a good all mode VHF-UHF rig, what would be the best, and why? So many out there now. The Yaesu 847, 857, 897, the Icom 706, 910. the Kenwood 2000, etc. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Except for the 910, all of these radios are primarily all mode HF rigs with VHF-UHF capabilities. Making a DC-to-Daylight rig imposes some compromises. You need to be aware of the HF capabilities of the rig, along with VHF-UHF and factor that into your buying decision.

I own a TS200X and an FT100D, both of which have compromises on features and performance. If I were to replace my FT100D mobile today, I would buy a Kenwood TS480HX (HF-6M) and a DM700A (VHF-UHF) to get the superior capabilities of each rig. I would replace my TS2000X with an IC756ProIII and a DM700A.

DM700A? Do you mean the TM-D700A Kenwood Dual Band FM Mobile? That wouldnt be all mode. Ive been looking into a lot of these radios for the same reasons.

The Icom IC-910 is your best bet for VHF/UHF all mode, its only drawback is the price. The Yaesu 847 is a good performer on VHF/UHF but its HF capabilities leave a lot to be desired, while the Kenwood TS2000 is probably the best all around balance for HF/VHF/UHF all mode operation. The Yaesu 857, 897 & Icom 706 are your best bang for the buck rigs. If you dont need the internal battery or power supply capabilities of the 897, just get the 857, they are basically the same radios in the electronics. The 706 is said to be a little better on the receive than the Yaesu models.

I personally am leaning toward the Yaesu FT-857D because I also want HF, and have major budget issues. If I can swing it budget wise, Ill get an Icom IC-706MKIIG.

The ideal setup would be an Icom IC-910 with an Icom IC-756 Pro III sitting next to it (the 7800 would be a pipe dream).

Hope this helps

The best VHF UHF performance can be obtained from transverters, and not from transceivers. This is because the IF systems in such radios are compromised to achieve overall performance.

A transverter will have the best front-end sensitivity and noise figure for that given band, and with the incorporation of an HF or 6 Meter radio (as the I.F.) that has excellent design over its frequency range, the combination cannot be surpassed!

If you can still find them, please consider the Icom 275A/H and 475A/H series. Though
it's two radios, I find their performance hard to beat compared to some of todays multibands.

Saw this on ebay

A little old and not very powerful, but hook it up to a good amplifier and it could be a good 2 meter ssb rig.

Well, this kind of depends.

My Yaesu FT-736R, for example, is a 4-band VHF-UHF all mode rig.

However, if you look at its block diagram, what it really is is a ten meter all-mode HF transceiver, with four transverter modules for the VHF-UHF bands.

Thus, it is the same as having an HF transceiver and four transverters, except it's all in one enclosure.

Most of the multi-band, multi-mode VHF-UHF rigs are designed and built this way. The "FM" VHF-UHF rigs are not.
