RE: ic706mkIIg vs ft897d Reply
by ONLYON6METERS on November 24, 2006 Mail this to a friend!
well, a short family trip allowed me to pass by a ham radio store and road test several radios side by side. i have a friend with an ic7000-i am not particular to its XMIT sound, so i tried that 1st. actually, i almost walked out then, when, after describing my situation, they STILL attempted to sell me the ic7000. another employee, allegedly at home, gave the 7000 'superb' signal reports. a new 897d got even better audio quality reports from him. i was not pleased with the yaesu, as the gentleman behind the counter, who claimed to own one, needed to go through the manual numerous times to make changes. i thought its receive audio sounded a bit odd, maybe nasally and without 'punch'. i would have thought an 'rf gain' was not adjusted properly, or PBT even a bit off, giving it an unnatural 'deep' sound. again, going against my wishes, they told me about several options i 'really need' to make a great radio even better. including the ldg wattmeter. come on guys, if it's so great, why do i need to buy more add-ons? i tried the 706mkIIg last. i got real good reports from this 'employee' again. we went back & forth between 2, 6 & 432 a few times on the icom. it took some persuasion to get him on SSB. apparently a hardcore FMer, which i am not. i switched through the radios a couple times on 2m SSB & found he could not tell which was which. good, just what i wanted to hear. the best sounding to him was the 706, the worst, the 7000! the 897 was a small step up from the 7000. the best receiver sound to me was the 706. the worst was the 7000. the 7000 also seemed to have the least receiver sensitivity! an FM simplex QSO on 2 was barely copiable on the 7000, but easily readable on the other 2. the 2m SSB signal seemed better on the 706 then the other 2. i made up my mind, went home without purchasing anything & perused the used listings of the major ham shops. 2 weeks later, i found a used 706mkIIg, with a load of accessories, box, manual, etc etc for a price i couldn't pass up! i had it on for 75% of the thirty day warranty period, it has performed flawlessly on local 6 & 2m SSB, & has made several contacts on the several small E openings that i was on the air for when i 1st got it. my friend with the 7000 actually likes my 706 more then his radio. i switched between the 706 & a couple other 6m radios i have & the 706 always got the best responses. i really have nothing to compare its 432 RCV to, but, another friend with 432 & a vertical antenna on his car told me i sounded just fine where he was at, & the fact that i had the signal on him i described was a good sign for its RCV. so, after somewhat-careful consideration, i went 706mkIIg & have not regretted it. i would say it WAS head & shoulders above the 7000, based on my needs, & somewhat better then the 897d. may a later generation 7000 will find its way into my base, & this 706 into the mobile. for now, i made the right decision!
