Hi everybody,
the new Yaesu VX-8R is coming, and it looks interesting. I am very interested in it, even if it will take a while before it hits the shelfs.
Apart from the preliminary list of specs that you can find over the Internet, do you have any supplementary information you would like to share?
I have also created a new yahoogroup devoted to this radio, you can find it at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VX_8R/
Please feel free to join. Looking forward to owning a VX-8R....
73,

Mike

Havn't heard any info yet.
Since my company (Motorola) purchased Yaesu, it may be the first product with joint engineering.

Saw it at Dayton yesterday. Here is Univerisal Radio's web page http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/ht/0008.html

It covers 6/2/220/440 at 5W (1.5 on 220). It does APRS with optional GPS. Also will have an optional Bluetooth headset. It is like a large VX-3, the same thickness but tall and wider.

The unit they had at Dayton you could touch but the lettering was not permanent. They said it came with a 1400 mAh battery.

It is to be available in late June at between $330 and $350, list.

The word at Dayton was that Motorola was only interested in Yeasu/Vertex was their commerical P25. That already most of the senior people at Yeasu were fired and that the amateur radio division was to be dismantled.

<< The word at Dayton was that ... >>

The word according to whom?

I would think that if "That already most of the senior people at Yeasu were fired", were true, it would have already hit the various communications-related media outlets.

I'm not saying it's not true, just that Dayton rumors are notorious for being wrong.

I had a number of conversations with Kenwood, Yeasu and ICOM folks. It was a Kenwood rep that commented on the firings of senior Yeasu folks.

The Yeasu folks that I spoke with, including an older Japanese enginer, seemed to have a strong dislike of D-Star (thought that it was not a true digital formate which makes me think that they will push P25). Yeasu most likely will not have D-Star but Kenwood might.

And of course, the Kenwood rep is a totally disinterested party, right? <g>

I have been looking through various dealers to see if there was any indication of when the unit would be sold or accessories available. Dealers say it looks like late July for deliever to them (but do not get our hopes up!).

As for accessories, here is something that I was able to glean off of HRO.

BH-1 $99.95 bluetooth headset
BU-1 $79.95 bluetooth adapter that mounts on radio
CAB-1 $10.95 charger sleeve for BH-1
Bluetooth kit with BH-1, BU-1, CAB-1 $159.95

More info on the Bluetooth accessories
It appears to be used on the FTM-10 tranceiver.
