HT memory organization Reply
by REMOVEZOMBIEFOOD on November 19, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Hello all. My name's Mike. I passed my Tech exam last Thursday and am anticipating my call showing up soon. I've been listening in on the local repeaters for a few weeks now (RACES/ARES net and a weekly club net in addition to everyday traffic) and can't wait to get in on it!

My question, though, is how do you program your radio memory? I bought a Yaesu FT-60R so I've got 1000 memory channels in ten banks and I want to program them in an efficient and logical manner. I was thinking about using one bank for southern California repeaters and another for police/fire/ambulance frequencies. Is this how anyone else manages their frequencies? Any tips or pointers you all could shoot my way?

Thanks in advance!
-Mike

hi Mike,

Congratulations on your new ticket.
Please keep going and get the General,
you'll be glad you did.

I put the local repeaters in first then simplex
frequencies, hand to have if you travel.

I like to program the NOAA Weather frequencies
in my HT, as a bonus, most HT will not transmit
out of band so if you have to 'TEST' the radio at
an airport, no chance of the security person hitting
the transmit on that frequency.

I live near the RDU airport so I have ATIS and the airport emergency frequencies in memory.

Hi James,
Thanks for the reply. I have so many memory channels I judt don't know what to do with them! I hadn't thought about airport frequencies but I think I'll program them in too.

When I passed my Tech test I went ahead and took the General as well. I didn't really study anything HF so I failed miserably (missed 20!) but I plan on hopefully getting it at the next VE session :)
