This is just an opinion...I really think there should be a special license which youth can get a tiny portion of an amateur radio band, and I mean tiny but enough to draw the younger folks into the hobby.Maybe QRP only band for CW?And have the license so easy to obtain,a 5 year old can get one.In the computer world with MYSPACE and CHAT,I really do not see kids interested in this hobby and I see this from trying to get my son and nephews involved.

I am not too sure about that. I am 15 years old and a 5 WPM Know Code Extra. Yes I enjoy CW and phone but I wanted the Extra class portions for DX. I think the FCC should give the new techs a very very small portion of 20 so they can see what the band is like. As far as a Youth license? Nah... just keep them the way they are... except I would like to see Advanced class back.

Many hams got the radio itch when they were kids from talking to their friends on CB radios. CB is actually on HF.

Seriously, my friend had a bunch of old CBs that he sold at a garage sale to some local kids. Now they are busy chatting it up every night, building wire antennas and learning about coax and power supplies!

I was just trying to think of ways to expand the hobby to younger folks.I know its hard for me to explain to my son and his cousin how fun it is,I know it started for me on the CB radio.I just wanted more so took my exam. When I was young, there was NO internet to steer me away from Ham radio.I feel with the "internet kids" today and cell phones, you really have to sell the HAM thing.Anyhow, about CB,I just converted a johnson messenger 323A for a 10 meter beacon.2watts!!!I am suprised how easy it was. 73`s all.

Some of the old tube CB rigs of the '60s are easy to convert to 10 meters, and can be a great learning experience!

I have full HF/VHF/UHF with Canadian basic (i have been grandfathered because i passed with higher then 80%). I don't know Morse code and never will . I think introducing a new license will probably make gaining more young hams harder then the US's license class is now .

Well, for what it is worth,I will post my beacon frequency.28.296 mhz. This Johnson 323A is putting out about 3 watts and holding after several hours so far.Signal sounds clean but will have to wait for reports to confirm. It is running off my 10 meter dipole for the time being and an old PC running CWTYPE program for now.I am hoping to get a NORCAL KEYER or similar and find a good place to keep it.For now,it may go off as I organize a bit.QRZ.com has my email and a photo of the rig.73`s from N2NXZ.
