So why do you ham? Reply

I had my license for over a year but I have never bought a radio. I've never really understood why it's fun? Why do you guys like it and what do you do? Just talk to random people? Also why is ham radio better than cb radio? I'm sure there's already posts like this but i couldn't find one when searching.

For loads of reasons! Meeting new people, experimenting with antennas and equipment, learning about electronics, contesting, helping out others in emergencies, etc. You really need to finally go out and buy a radio and experience it all for yourself!

Ditto...
..and the thought of keying the mike and making contact with somebody ...say 7000, or more miles away.
No internet, no phone wires....just air waves.
Still magic for me !

Like many others I say for many reasons. Does it make sense? Why do people watch a football game? Why do they ski? Why do some collect stamps or coins? It is for the fascination of the hobby. The virus bit me when I was 9 years when my father bought me my first CB-radio. Since 1990 I have been licensed and have worked the world since then but the fascination is still the same. Thats why we do it.

With all due respect, why would it matter why any one of us got our license? What is fun or interesting to us may not be the least bit interesting to you.

The question you have to ask yourself is why did YOU go through the effort to get your license?

Try CW. For many of us, that's the most fun.
Good luck and 73

Well, that's a good question, and you've got some straight answers.

I think the people who are really dedicated to the hobby are the ones who see radio as somewhat fascinating. I've always been intrigued that my little box, with a piece of wire for an antenna, can generate radio signals that can be heard all over the world. There are no wires between them, no Internet connection - when I push the button on my microphone, the signals just magically get there. The world is a very big place, and it's just amazing at times how far a few watts of RF energy will go.

Many people do it for specific things, such as SKYWARN or other kinds of public service events. We have a very active group for public service here, and we provide communications for a number of different events throughout the year. We have a very busy SKYWARN group when we are getting bad weather. You don't have to worry much about tornadoes in your part of the country, but there are still SKYWARN nets when they're needed.

Others like to build their own equipment - something you can't do in CB, or any other radio service beside ham radio.

And yes, making random contacts is a big part of it for most of us. You live in an area where VHF contacts should be fairly easy, because there are repeaters in the mountains with huge coverage areas. But for most of us, HF is the way to go. You also have HF privileges now, if you didn't know it. When FCC did away with the code tests, they abolished the code test for 'Tech +' so now, you have Tech + privileges, including phone and digital on 10 meters, and CW on 80, 40, 15 and 10. They also expanded and moved the Technician CW bands to what were the General CW bands previously(with some exceptions). If you know CW, you can get on the air immediately. If not, you can either learn, or try to do CW using a computer to send and receive.

Yes, it is fun to make contacts with new people who usually share at least a few interests with you - ham radio being one of them.

I suggest you find a local radio club and go to some of their meetings. If you don't like the first one, find another one - there are lots in the Big Valley. The ARRL website can help you locate clubs.

You have to be the type that gets into the excitement of speaking all over the world, and having that ability to communicate, in that way via a radio and knowing you have designed and/or built your Station to DO -- WHAT YOU -- WANT TO DO. I suppose for "US" that know it, and have that feeling THEN it really is FUN, PLEASURE, ENJOYMENT, As far as CB...Man I got tired years ago of the Filthy Language, NO RULES, NO CARES Mentality...Night and Day difference there, but we dont have that much time...Hahahahaha, God Bless and 73. - Jerry

I find radio highly fascinating . Making a contact with someone using radio waves is great! . I also love it because of the community and how ( most ) hams treat each other as family. I don't like CW because of the fact im tone deaf, So no CW for me . I can probably send it but not receive.

Making friends is what it's really all about... and what's a better way to do that than by being on ham radio?
