VHF/UHF+ Network Reply
by KI4PRK on September 29, 2007 Mail this to a friend!
Hello to all: I'm Brennen Ernst, KI4PRK, age 13. I'm mainly a HF DXer, but recently I've gotten into VHF/UHF/Microwave stuff and I've just taken my first steps towards getting on the air on those bands. I don't mean FM repeater & ragchewing stuff, I mean like SSB/CW on the first 400 or so kHz of 2M, etc. Problem is, the hard part, unlike HF, is actually finding someone to contact. Would any young hams like to start a network to help others towards VUCC and other higher frequency pleasures? OM's are welcome too, of course, but I'd like to start something with the younger hams. vry 73, de Brennen KI4PRK

You'll have better luck making 2 meter SSB contacts during contests. Maybe you could try contacting the ARRL to get the word out about a possible new youth net for 2m sideband. A QST article could do wonders for your cause.

I'd try to get some input from local clubs and listen
on 144.180 - 144.225 for the few die hard SSB fans
who meet daily, many in the early mornings.
73, and welcome to the weak signal adventure.

Plenty of people talk on 2m SSB. The thing is that they still represent a small percentage of all ham activity. Generally speaking, you should throw up an omni and a beam antenna, and listen around for signals. They'll be activity during contests, but less most other times. You will be amazed at what you can do on 2m SSB when the band opens up!
