I just passed my Technician exam and are waiting for my call to appear in ULS. I am wanting to know if technician class hams are allowed to use any HF. I have read on some websites that they are allowed some very limited HF Privileges and other sites say they are allowed no HF. I can't seam to find an answer that satisfies me. I read somewhere that all technicians are granted tech plus privileges which has some HF. Anyone know the current rule on this?

Hello i'm 14 and a teck license as well. On 10 meters voice you have 28.300 to 28.500 mhz. You may wan't to get a recent band plan because teck's have privledges on morse code on 3 or 4 bands. But get you a 10m 100w hf radio usb{upper side band} and a power supply, and bulid you a halfwave 10m dipole. I've had my teck license for a year now and a few months ago i built myself a dipole and for the past few month's i've talked to florida, north east and texas. 10 meters is a odd band sometimes it is not open for days then for 3 hours it is opened across the usa. 10m is going to pick up here in the next year so they say. 73's drop me an email at kd8fdd@juno.com

Thanks for the help! I was hoping that I could dabble in HF with a tech. I also wanted to know to help me decide what rig I wanted to buy. I'm thinking about something that has HF/VHF/UHF so when I upgrade my class I won't have to buy any more equipment. Thanks again for the help! I'm glad I can talk to fellow teens. On a side note... What rigs are you guys using? There Are so many to choose from! I'm thinking about going with a mobile/base.

The latest allocations, which were effective Feb 23, 2007, give Technicians the following frequencies: 80m 3525-3600 kHz CW * * Max 200 watts PEP 40m 7025-7125 kHz CW * 15m 21025-21200 kHZ CW * 10m 28000-28300 kHz CW, RTTY, Data * 28300-28500 kHz CW and SSB phone * 6m 50.0-50.1 mHz CW 50.1-54.0 mHz CW, RTTY, Data, MCW, phone and image 2m 144.0-144.1 mHz CW 144.1-148.0 mHz CW, RTTY, Data, MCW, phone and image 1.25m 222.0-225.0 mHz ditto 70cm 420.0-450.0 mHz ditto You always find the latest allocations displayed in a nice, suitable-for-framing chart at: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/bands.html If you will look on this chart, you'll notice that there is nothing to differentiate between a "Tech plus" and a "Tech minus" any more, now that the CW requirement has been removed. All Technicians have the same priveleges, now.

Try 10 meters SSB. A lot of new Techs are getting on there now, and the band has been opening up quite a lot lately for DX. In just a few short years, 10 meters will be jumping with DX from all over the world!

These sorts of questions are always easily answered by reading the Rules. Here is a link to Part 97: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/news/part97/ As was pointed out, Techs get some 10m phone from 28.300-28.500. But, there is a caveat. That means that none of your signal may occupy space outside those parameters. And, your signal has width. Better not ever transmit above -- say -- 28.497. Watch the lower side, too. Oh, and Techs get 200W on HF, not 100W. See 47 CFR §97.313(c)(2). Peter, N4LI

Congrats, and welcome to radio ! You are at a great age to begin the hobby ! Stay with it, and you will find it very rewarding. Plus it is a perfect time to get on the bands, with the sun spot cycle starting to come back. There are many rigs that you can choose, take your time and look at the various reviews on this site.
