Thanks for the reply! I'm glad to hear to someone close to home. I will be in the myrtle beach area the first part of june and july hopefully I can give you a shout on the mobile. I totally agree with you on echolink. I've actually never used it, I just set it up. I believe if your going to be a operator you have to use the air, not the internet. I might be wrong but the strength of amateur radio is being able to communicate when all other systems are down. I have also noticed others telling me not to stop at a tech. Don't worry, I know there is much more out there than VHF/UHF. I went last month to try for my general ticket, but failed by one question. The next day the VEC called me and told me they gave me a test with the old question pool. I am going to retake it on saturday and hopefully pass. I might hold off on the extra for a while. When I get my general ticket I will probably buy an Icom IC-7000. The only problem I face is that I am graduating high school this summer and will be going to college in the fall and will have to concoct some kind of dorm room setup. Don't know quite yet how I will do this but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Once again thanks for everyone that has helped me out the last few months! I think of this website and its people as my Elmer!

If you or anyone else is ever in Greenville, SC or surrounding areas and wish to chat try my on 146.01 IN 146.61 OUT. If all goes well I will have a decent HF setup this summer and would love to make some contacts with y'all.

Grant,

There are a lot of nice folks on the Greenville repeaters, but like anywhere you might have called when nobody was on. The 146.610- machine has a Net every night at 9PM local time. If you listen, you will hear 50-80 local Hams check in and many comments afterwards. Listen to how folks check in and when you're group is called do as they've done. This Net was my first QSO and I've made a lot of friends here in the ensuing years. If you want info on the local clubs (or anything else to do with Ham radio) just ask on the Net. You'll get good answers on this net, I promise!

Don't stop with nets and 2M, there's a lot more out there as you will find if you upgrade. Just remember there are ill-mannered folks everywhere (yes even on HF and maybe especially on 75M) so don't let them ruin your fun. More than ever, Ham Radio has something intriguing and interesting for everyone so open your hotizons and enjoy!

Thanks for the reply Phil. This post is pretty old and since then I have made many contacts on the Greenville 146.610- machine and surrounding repeaters. I check in to the BRARS net every chance I get. I have also upgraded to general and enjoy working HF. I agree, there are many nice hams in Greenville and I enjoy talking with them.

Thanks for the post and hope to hear you on the air.
