Sounds like a good plan, would you want to make this an International group or US specific?
I've been helping my Cousins do the UK "Novice Radio Amateur Exam" and its really a shame that there aren't more young people taking an active role in the hobby.... The impression tends to be that ALL radio amateurs are in their 60's or older and it simply isn't the case.
I hope to hear more younger people on the air, and after being licenced for some time (Since I was 16) I'm finally getting round to doing somthing about getting on HF too.... Perhaps in time for JOTA?

There is a club called the League of Young Radio Amateurs, and it is a youth club that is modelled like the ARRL. Go to their website at http://www.youngradioamateurs.com and join for free! The more people they get, the better LYRA will be.

Thanks, Brian! I'll be in this forum from time to time, I am currently the President of the League of Young Radio Amateurs. I am also involved with the International Youth Communications Council, we work to plant and provide assistance to organizations throughout the world.
I have been licensed since I was 14, and I have enjoyed the hobby. I'm looking forward to meeting more people on this forum :)

Andrew, W4CCE

I have found, sadly that in the UK, the technical requirement of the full licence is far lower than the beurocratic requirement of the Novice licence. I have 2 cousins aged 13 and 15 and it took 2 years to arrange the Novice licence course they have just completed!!! I think it is important to keep the technical requirements sufficient, however it's a real shame that kids are not finding out about Amateur radio in this country and when they do it's very hard indeed to get involved.
I'd be interested to hear how it might be done in other places around the world?

Do you have to get a Novice license first? Here in the United States you can start as a Technician, General or Extra just by passing the exam requirements. Age is not an issue, and we have alot of good study books. I specifically like for kids "Riding the Waves With Alpha and Zulu" and for those just a little older and up ;-) I like "Now You're Talking!" They are both available through the American Radio Relay League, and the "Now You're Talking!" is available at most Radio Shack retail stores.

No you don't have to get a novice licence first, but we only have 2 licence classes, Novice and Standard (With and without CW)...
The Standard licence obviously has fairly stringent requirements, so the average 12 year old isn't going to be able to handle it...
The problem is that so few people actually start that young that the novice licence is somwhat neglected and courses are spread so far apart that it's almost always impossible for the average 12 year old to travel to one on a regular basis.
The problem is really a lack of interest, or should I say awareness... most kids simply don't know that Amateur radio exists, I wonder how young people get into amateur radio around the world?

I have a very similar problem, my Daughter aged 8 is very interested in becoming a novice, but, I can't find a course that I can take her to. There are courses being run, but, they all start at 7:30-8pm and finish far too late for an 8 year old!, her normal bed time is 8pm!.
Is there anyone in the West Midland/Shropshire/Worcestershire area that knows of early evening or weekend courses?

Sorry to hear that, it's a real shame... I'm afraid you're nowhere near us. You could always register yourself as an instructor and do it yourself, perhaps with some other kids... I know that's not always possible either.
I found somone just starting a course by sending a message on Packet radio!
I'd be interested to know how you get on,..

Hey, Just a thought....
Perhaps you could approach the school (perhaps a bit young but mabe not)... mabe they'd let you do a presentation about amateur radio as part of a science class?
That way you could get a feel for if there would be any interest in setting up a novice scheme... mabe that could be arranged through the school too?
