CW and the young ham. Reply

Are there any young ops out there who use CW, or are you pretty much in agreement with me that CW is a dead and relatively useless mode and we need to eliminate all CW exams and the CW only portions of the band?

I am young ham, but I do not agree. I say we keep CW to help filter out all the idiots out there who just want to get on the waves and mess around and break laws.

As it says in my bio: One thing I fear is that Ham radio will turn into CB....I think CW will help keep that line in between.

KD8AQO,
Ray, thank you for your comments. This TECH guy has been around for a couple of years on eHam and is an avid anti code person. I don't know if he is even licensed.

I'm not a young Ham, but I used to be. I was first licensed as a Novice in 1955 at 10 years old and got my general in '56. And I guess it's OK to be proud of the fact that I still retain my original issue call letters.

I don't know that the CW requirement necessarily keeps out bad operators. I'm sure you've heard experienced old timers displaying extremely bad practice on the air. But all OT's are not like that.

I remember when I started studying for my first exam in 1954, my father told me that there's a lot more to it than just learning code. You need to learn how to build your own equipment, learn how to solder, read schematics, operating procedure, regulations, etc, etc.

Ray, thank you for your outlook on Ham Radio, which has been a fine tradition in experimentation and communications since shortly after the turn of the last century.

John

I agree with both of you that CW is a vital part of Ham Radio, not to mention a very enjoyable mode. I run about 50% CW here, and love it. And there are many young hams out there that like to run CW, but the biggest problem with getting them on CW is just getting the will up to go make contacts. You don't have to be a 25wpm speed demon to run CW, well if your not I suggest not to run CW contests, hihi.

Hi all,

I am 16 and operate about 85% cw. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

HEY TECH2005: If you would spend the same amount of time learning cw as you are bashing code ops, not only would you have the code down and be on hf, you would never have to worry about (or listen to) cw again ( unless your on a repeater!!).

"are you pretty much in agreement with me that CW is a dead"

Dead? Have you scanned the CW portions of the HF bands lately? I tend to hear more guys on CW than on SSB on any given weekday.

"and relatively useless mode"

Tell that to my grandfather who had the walls of his shack plastered with rewards - and he was a CW-only op.

"and we need to eliminate all CW exams"

No one agrees with that who's posted here so far. See above.

"and the CW only portions of the band?"

For that matter, let's eliminate every portion of the bands you don't like or don't use! Anything else you'd like to get rid of?

Come on, was this thread really necessary?

If code was useless, it would have faded away long ago BUT.....

Right now we're in a renaissance of CW activity, look at all the CW-only rigs coming out, all the makers of keys, all the code learning methods everyone's talking about, etc.

IF code was learn to get the license and forget it, you'd not have all these people using CW now. No one's paying all these people to use code, and make Streight Key NIght bigger each year, they're doing it because it's fun.

I wouldnt be on the bands if I couldnt use CW...
I know they will knock it out of the exams cause so many people dont/cant use it,but for my 2 cents,I wish they would hurry and pass the grandfather rule and make me a "general" :o) .I have never had a problem with CW,but get me near anything electrical and you had better back up and wear your safety goggles..
