Which and why? Do the 'no radial' verticals perform as poorly as I am led to believe?

Yes.
Any vertical will need a counter poise. The better the counter poise the better the performance.
As for the Big SteppIR mine performs very well and excees trap verticals for performance but like all verticals it is about 20 dB less in performance than my 4 element at 100 feet.
I use it mostly for 40/30 meters.

The Steppir is a remotely length adjustable antenna which will be the equivalent of a 1/4 wave vertical from 40 to 6 meters. When used with a good radial field it will outperform the Diamond BB7V on all fronts. The BB7V is 22 foot vertical with a 50 ohm dummyload at its feedpoint to present a 50 ohm match to the radio. A compromise antenna at best.

I have been using the BIG IR vertical ( 40 - 6 ) meters for over 2 yrs now. It continues to perform great. Mine is mounted thru the roof of my garage. The motor assembly is inside the garage out of the weather. BUT - here is a twist: Instead of using fixed radials for each band that present 50 ohms at a certain frequency because of their length, I added a 2nd Steppir motor assembly under the main motor and plumbed the inside of my 20 ft x 20 ft garage with 1" PVC to accomidate the steppir burrilium strips. So now, I have a set of "TUNED" radials that present a 50 ohm load at any frequency ! I got the idea from a couple guys out east and so I tried it, with great success. I also had to change the chip in the controller to accomidate the 2nd motor. This antenna has a great deal of flexability when it comes to installing in different style locations. I also am using the 4 element Steppir beam 20 - 6 mtrs ( 3 yrs now ) with the 40/30 ad-on kit soon to be installed. STEPPIR IS THE WAY TO GO.

The Diamond is essentially a resistive matching network with a vertical section attached to one side. You can duplicate it by attaching a dummy load to your rig and a 10' piece of wire to the hot side of the resistor in the dummy load. DON'T waste your money.
Same thing for the Comet version of the same antenna.

Ok sounds like I need to invest in a beam instead! Thanks for all the info! I am concerned about the radial system because the general area I had in mind for this would make for a good installation.
