My local BMV screws up ROYALLY! Reply
by K9FON on November 7, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Last week, I went to my local BMV to pick up my new call sign plates that reflected my change of my call. What a JOKE!!
Last fall, I reserved my call under K9FON after changing it from my old call. I filled out the paperwork and confirmed the new call plate last fall with no problems. Last week I went to get the plates and found out the local BMV now has all new women working. So I told the lady that i was there to pick up my new callsign plates. She looked at me totaly lost and ask what was a call sign plate for? I told her ham radio. She asked "What is ham radio? Is it like CB radio?" She didnt act like she knew what was going on and only wanted to chit chat. So she had another employee come over to help. The other employee was jus as clueless as the one helping me! So they asked the shift supervisor to come over. Again, clueless as the other two! I told the three of the that all I wanted was my call plates and that was it. Well they couldn't find any records that i filled out a new paper to get my new call sign plates with my new call. So I had to exlain to them again what I did last fall as they stood there, all three of them, slack jawed. They still were clueless as they tried to find the info on the comupter. Well after the ordeal they said that the new plates will come via mail in a few days. I finally asked the if the new plates will show my new callsign, and I said that I will be mad and I will be back if they don't. They said yes it will be under my new call but the registration I was given still showed my old call!:^(
Well just today I got the "new plates" and wouldn't you know it, it is my old callsign even after I signed up for a new callsign plate!!!! My buscuits are FROSTED!!!!! So now I will be going back to the BMV to get it all straightened out even after I explained to them dillys 3 TIMES IN A ROW that my new callsign should be on my new plates the BMV STILL messed it up!!!!! Lesson here; never go to the BMV on a Saturday, and NEVER deal with a new person, always look for an older employee that has been at the BMV a while!!!

It looks from the ham locator that there are about 10 hams in your town of Waterloo, IN. Vanity plate issues would seem to come up very infrequently. Getting our knickers all in a knot never solves anything. Hope you feel better.

The problem is obvious. You didn't give her a tip. No! Not that TIP!

Without a doubt you are correct Alan, but sometimes dealing with incompetent public servants will drive you up the wall! :)

Here in NC, they are referred too as Amateur radio plates. Calling them "Ham" radio plates, or call sign plates would only cause looks of confusion to be directed your way.

What are they officially called in your state?

No i dont feel better! If it happened to you im sure you would be mad too. The reason im ticked is because I had to explain to them 4 times about what i needed to have done and they still messed it up.

It's the same way here, and we have a lot of hams in a dense population. Here the plates come from the Tax office and are issued/taxed at the county level. I don't know if we have a DMV per se, but we have a "DPS" department of public safety which has the State Troopers and the Drivers license division--totally separate from the license plate process at the county tax office.

So, I tried to get vanity plates on my new pickup. I called the tax office ahead of time to make sure I had all the right paperwork, filled out, "i's" dotted, "t's" crossed, etc. etc. etc. because I didn't want to stand in line for 2 or 3 hours just to get the run around.

It was not to be. Read on.

When I finally got to the window to get the plates, they couldn't find any record of my existing plates, which means the car did not exist, sort of. I could not believe it.

How could they not? It's "not in the system" they told me. You gotta be kidding me. So I talked to supervisors and super-supervisors and no one knew why my current plates were not in the system. Bear in mind, this is the same freaking agency that issued the current plates in the first place, weeks before on this new vehicle. It's not like I had just driven it off the lot and came right over to the tax office.

I thought, damn. This would be a good time to rob a bank. It's not like they would be able to trace my plates! Jeeeeeze.

Hours of my time wasted. Freaking wasted. I just gave up and said, "screw it (actually, the language was a bit stronger than that) I don't need to pay extra for this crap anyway. So I have plain plates. Maybe it would be easier to change my call sign to match my license plate?

That has to be the close to the epitome of bureaucratic stupidity. This was Harris County Tax Office at the Cypresswood branch office, for anyone interested in the specifics.

Usually they are not stupid, but this must have been "leave-your-brains-at-home-and-sniff-some-paint-thinner day." It was a Friday, after all.

Oh wow.. That makes my ordeal look petty. Well here in Indiana i dont think one needs a high school education to work for the BMV, or so it seems. Most of the women that work in my local BMV dont act like they have much more than an 8th gade education. Most of them dont act like they know how to use a computer and Windows progam. You tell them the correct way to do something and they look at you like they are half retarded.

The correct term in Indiana is "Amateur Radio License Plate" or "Amateur Radio Plate"

As you no doubt already know -- though it may be helpful for others in IN -- they further stipulate (pretty typical for Amateur plates):

"Only Indiana residents who hold a valid amateur radio operator's license may obtain this license plate. You must present a copy of your FCC license at a branch when you first order this plate."

also:

"You may display this plate on passenger cars, trucks up to 11,000 pounds, and recreational vehicles."

They can not be renewed on line or at a Self-Service Terminal and regular registration fees and taxes apply, plus an $8 administration fee.

Best of luck & keep a copy of the form(s).
