Operate IC706MkIIG without HF Antenna?

I just got my new IC706MkIIG and I am anxious to "fire it up" for the first time as my base station. Only problem, the northeast blizzard has prevented me from putting up my HF antenna. Would it hurt the radio if I only had my 2m/70cm dual-band antenna hooked up to the VHF/UHF antanna socket, leaving the HF antenna socket empty? Of course, I WOULD NOT XMIT ON HF in this condition - it's only temporary, until the ground thaws a little. I'd like to work the 2m and 70cm bands, though, just to get familiar with the rig. Something tells me I should have SOMETHING hooked up to that empty socket, even a dummy load (which of course I don't have). Advice? Thx, 73, Jim

I don't see that it would hurt anything to use the VHF/UHF antenna only as long as you don't key the rig on any of the HF or 6M bands.

As long as you utilize only the 2 meter and 70 centimeter band it doesn't matter if anything is connected to the HF connector.

As an added precaution against a "Senior Moment" or a direct strike by Murphy, I'd make sure to reduce the power on the HF bands to the minimum, if you can do that seperately from the power controls for 2M/70 cm. You can also protect the radio by connecting the HF output to a dummy load, something we all should have for off-air testing. Even if you have to spend a couple dozen $$ for one, it's cheap insurance, and will come in handy many many times, even after you get your HF antenna installed.
Good luck, and have fun.

It's perfectly fine to run just 2/440 with only that connection and nothing on HF. Think about it for a second....if you used a duplexer on the 706 to use just one antenna for all the bands (Outbacker, Comet CA-HV, whatever) why don't you fry the duplexer when just on VHF/UHF transmitting? Because the radio is not transmitting on HF and no output is occuring from the HF port. Zilch, nada, nothing...
Same goes the other way. Think of how many radios would be fried from just using the HF side with nothing connected to the V/U side. Almost 90% of hams using the 706 use it only on HF for portable use, etc. In this case, there simply is not output on the V/U side when using HF.
Plug in it to 2/440, grab a cup of tea, hunker down from the storm and enjoy the heck out of that great little ICOM. You're gonna love it!

if it is like most rigs , even if you transmit on the hf with no antenna, the crow bar curcuits kick in and ALC it to 0 output any how.. most everyone has keyed up a rig with no antenna sometime or other..

If you attach any length of coax to the HF antenna port, you will be able to LISTEN to some of the HF bands, especially 80m, even without an antenna.

Hi !
I'm using the IC706MKIIG with just the V/UHF antenna connected since one year and I had absolutely no troubles. When I would like to operate on the 6m band I move the PL from one socket to the other.
