Howdy, whats the best way to clean-up a Drake MN-2700 black "sticky style" cabinet without removing paint? Please respond "if" you have experience in this. Thanks, Ken

Please let me know if you come up with a solution. I think re-painting may be the only solution.

I don't profess to know what "sticky Style" is. But I do know this. If you put the cabinet in the dishwasher on the short cycle, and turn the heat dry off (air dry only), it'll come out clean. Once it is clean, a good hand drying is all it needs.

No, Alan is not kidding. I hear this works quite nicely.

I don't have an MN-2700, but I do have a TR-7 and I think the finish you describe is the same.

Lemon oil seems to work.

I endorse the dishwasher method as well -- after removing anything that can be harmed by water. In the MN-2700, there many not be anything that can be harmed, although I might consider removing the panel meter (when they get water in them, the condensation can take weeks to evaporate) and maybe re-grease the bearings in the tuning capacitors after it's dry.

With the TR-7, you can use the dishwasher method after removing the speaker and the panel meter. Everything else is washable (I know, I've done it)! If you want to try the dishwasher method, use liquid dishwasher detergent, preferably something with lemon in it -- works well and comes out smelling very nice.

73 & good luck,

Steve WB2WIK/6

Thank You everybody so far. And a special thanks to Steve for being so active/helpful on this website. Now, back to the Drake......I am only interested in cleaning the cabinet and I should have specified that I am able to remove the black "sticky" cabinet prior to cleaning. I do not have access to a dishwasher - which yes, I have heard is a good way to clean "some" older gear. Instead, it looks like I will just be using a clean cotton rag with some sort of mild cleaning solution. I will keep my eye out for lemon (Orange) based cleaners when I go to the store/Home depot. I do remember an Orange based cleaner.
I'd like to try a mild bit of "Simple Green" but am reluctant due to the mild smell residue it may leave (would it go away with time?)....back to any further commments.....

Ken: I have been using waterless hand cleaner for years to restore the finish on older rigs. Be sure to NOT to use the type with pummis. DL Waterless handcleaner works very well and will not harm the paint at all. I've even used it on old Hammurland bandspread and frequency dials with no deteriation of the numbers or letters at all and it made the dials white again.. It will clean tar and nicotene off of anything without harming the original finish. It seems to bring back some of the luster as well. Good luck. Max
