Hey everyone, I received a 140 from another MARS member and he assured me that the mod had been completed. I tried it on the net the next night, and it wouldn't transmit on frequency, but transmitted on the normal ham bands. I opened the case to check and see if the OM had forgotten to do the mod, but the diode had indeed been cut. I bent the diode back to insure it would not make contact, reset the radio and it transmitted on the MARS freq. Since the net was not for another hour or so, I tuned around the ham bands. When I came back to the MARS freq and tried to transmit on it into a dummy load, nothing. Anyone have an idea what is going wrong? Should I completely remove the diode? Thanks in advance!

What you should do it return the rig to the person who sold it to you and get your money back.

What you might try is getting a copy of the mod and ensuring the correct diode was cut and that the reset procedure is/was correctly accomplished. Just a thought.....

Yeah, I opened her up and made sure it was D31 that was cut. Maybe I didn't do the reset procedure correctly. I held down the A=B button and turned it on, maybe I need to hold the button longer?? And I can't get my money back because it was free, and the rig works exactly as it would straight from the factory.

I know that the TS-140s mod works because that is the rig I use on Army MARS. Make sure the A=B button is correctly working before trying the reset again. My rig is starting to show some bounce on the front panel switches and sometimes they don't make contact the first time I press the switch. If it's working, I'd suggest holding the A=B button much longer as you turn power on.

I had a TS-140 years ago and I could have sworn there was one other step needed besides the diode. (I know. I've been through everything on the net and haven't found it.) Back then, there wasn't a net and I called Kenwood to get the info. I even had to give the tech my MARS callsign.
I just bought a mint TS-430S. Not only did I have to clip a diode, but I had to clip a resistor. (For MARS freqs only.) If you wanted total transmit in order to get on 60 meters, you pull the #10 plug.
