Please excuse my ignorance, but I have often wondered if it is legal for a MARS operator to communicate with a civilian (non-MARS) ham operator using split frequencies...that is, say the Mars op talking to the ham on a mars frequency or vice versa.

Thanks in advance!

This is done yearly during the Armed Forces Day Crossband Test. However, I believe that both MARS and Amateur regulation would not allow this type of operation on a regular basis.

MARS celebrates Armed Forces Day annually with a traditional military to amateur crossband communications test and a message-receiving test. These tests give amateur radio operators and shortwave listeners an opportunity to demonstrate their individual technical skills and receive recognition from the Secretary of Defense or the appropriate military radio station for their proven expertise. A QSL card is provided to those making contact with one of the military stations. Special commemorative certificates are awarded to anyone who receives and accurately copies the digital Armed Forces Day message from the Secretary of Defense.

Participating military stations transmit on selected military MARS frequencies and listen for amateur radio stations in the amateur bands. The military station operator will announce the specific amateur-band frequency being monitored. Usually, the military MARS stations are at places such as Fort Detrick, Fort Huachuca, Andrews Air Force Base, and Nellis Air Force Base.

Hello:
I would like to know if there is a list of radios that are useable for MARS service?
I have a Yaesu Ft-840 for a HF rig and Yaesu FT 7800r for VHF/UHF use.
Can someone please post a link so i can take a look at what wil work with MARS?

That way I can make sure that my radios will work the best that I can and will be clean when I do use them.

I am unaware of any such list, however virtually any radio made in the last 20 years can be MARS modified.

Another note: if you decide to operate with ALE, there is a list of radios that will work with the ALE softeware and scan as required. Other then that, almost any raio made within the last 15years will work just fine with a modification.

Take a look at "http://www.mods.dk", they have most fix actions for the mod available there. As with all things related to modding a radio, if in doupt get an experienced hand to do it.

In 80% of the cases its a simple mod, clip a wire, remove a diode, short or unshort a solder pad.

Enjoy!
