VHF/UHF MARS? Reply
by KD0ANL on June 12, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I've been meaning to ask about this for a while now, but what is the story with VHF/UHF MARS?

I only ask because I found a reference on the web to the MARS/CAP mod for my Kenwood TM-V71A

Please, before anyone starts telling me about licenses and the law, I haven't done the mod, don't want the mod, and have not intention of doing the mod.

I don't know a lot about MARS but I have read some, and I have never seen any mention of anything but HF MARS. What's the story with V/UHF MARS?

Thanks all.

There are VHF voice and packet nodes in the MARS services, and mobile and handheld VHF rigs are sometimes used during deployment/drills, but HF is still the primary part of the spectrum used for MARS. HF capability is required and necessary for MARS membership and participation. I've never personally had any experience with UHF in MARS in my part of the country, but I'm sure the frequencies are available and possibly in use somewhere.

We make extensive use of VHF voice and dsta in Delaware. Being a small state, VHF is very useful. We have 4 VHF repeaters blanketing the State. The National Guard provided the repeaters (1 Quantar and 3 MTR 2000 Motorolas), MARS provides frequencies and maintenance. We have several VHF Winlink 2000 packet ports as well.
