MARS MEMBER PARTICIPATION Reply
by WB4N on November 16, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
THE ARMY MARS REGION 4 STAFF (ALL REGION 4 SMD'S) HAS BEEN DISCUSSING RECENTLY, HOW TO GET MORE PARTICIPATION FROM OUR CURRENT MEMBERS. IT STARTED OUT AS A DISCUSSION ON HOW TO GET MORE MEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER TO BE NCS (NECOS). IT SEEMS THAT SOME NETS GO "UN-CALLED", BECAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO BE NCS. I HAVE CHECKED INTO SEVERAL KY NETS "LATE", AND FOUND THAT NO ONE HAD OPENED THE NET. AS SOON AS I OPENED THE NET, "SEVERAL" STATIONS IMMEDIATELY CHECKED IN. IT SEEMS THAT EVERYONE WAS WAITING FOR "SOMEONE ELSE" TO OPEN THE NET. ALL MEMBERS KNOW THAT IF THE SCHEDULED NCS DOES NOT OPEN THE NET BY "02 AFTER THE HOUR", THAT SOMEONE ELSE SHOULD GO AHEAD AND OPEN THE NET. BUT MOST OF OUR MEMBERS, REFUSE TO BE NCS. AFTER DISCUSSING THIS AMONG THE REGION 4 STAFF, WE FOUND THIS TO BE A REGION-WIDE PROBLEM. WE WOULD BE GREATFUL FOR ANY IDEAS ANYONE MAY HAVE ON CURING THIS PROBLEM.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I will be contacting you off the forum to obtain your application. I will forward it up the chain of command. We WILL get you in the program because our ducks are rowed up. :)

If anyone has had failure with MARS (especially Navy-Marine Corp MARS (http://www.navymars.org)), email me off list. I will provide you a tollfree fax number to send your application and license. I will move that through the chain of command for your.

Let me know how more I can help.

We have had good success with our website in getting a few new members. I am also working on a way to recruit from younger amateurs - starting with school clubs and the like. I think we need to have younger blood in the ranks.

The website is at http://wa.mars.hfradio.org/ - I'm the webmaster, and the Emergency Operations Officer for Washington State Army MARS, AAM0EWA.

Well, In May I gave my info at Mars booth at the Dayton hamfest. Nothing heard. In August I gave my info at the booth at the Scott AFB air show. Got an Email requesting more info, stressed requirements and necessary equipment, and abililty to operate with Pactor to be accepted and remain active and promising to send application form. Replied, Nothing heard since early September. So, while I'm at the Indiana State convention last weekend, I stop by the Mars booth one more time. They had the application forms there and he sent me home with them and promised he would personally get them processed when I returned them with copies of my FCC License. I would like to work with the AF Mars, but this is my last effort to volunteer to help them. FYI, I'm retired Air Force, spent 8 years in Command level Command and Control, and held Top Secret clearance.

How many others have just decided it wasn't worth the hassel?

If I've hurt feelings or got some people in trouble: I'm sorry about the hurt feelings, my feelings are hurt because I'm feeling rejected; I'm not sorry about any trouble caused, maybe changes will be made.

And further more, I had recently joined NACEC, when some enterprizing, uninformed military person sent a slanderous Email that went through the military organizaiton faster than a chainmail prommising a million dollars, branding NACEC as a terrorist organization and not to be associated with.

Yup, I've got a chip on my shoulder, and now you know how it got there.

Send me an email, off forum.

I'll do what I can to help with AF MARS (just know that I am Navy Marine Corp MARS though).

Although off topic ...

I believe DoD itself may have issued the warnings about NACEC. There appear to be some serious questions about the actual nature of the organization. I know my son's command told all their people to stay clear of it.

Not to start an inter-service agrument (gg), but that doesn't seem to be a problem with NAVMARCORMARS. In MDE, I can't remember a net ever going past a couple of minutes before some else took the net. Here we have the practice that the NECOS is responsible to let the membership know if they aren't going to be aboard. SInce our membership is on a list server, it takes only one email to do the notification.

IF no-shows are a problem, your SMD and you Assistant for Net Operations need to deal with the offenders. If nothing else, the Net Ops person should take the net.

Barry,

Not to toot our own horn, but we in MDE average 30 to 40 percent of the active-status members participating on any given net. 15 to 20 check-ins per net are common here.

Sorry about including the "off topic" information. I went back in my Email and refreshed my recollection. It appears the original RCERT alert came from a secretary (that's lower case "s" as in clerk). For additional info here is a URL for an "Urban legends site" http://www.snopes.com/rumors/nacec.asp. I know it wasn't Mars people responsible. I know the NACEC topic is a dead horse. NACEC gave up and shut down.
That's all, Im done. No more NACEC grumbling from me.
