One way to get new NECOS operators is to offer " ALL " NECOS operators, to double their hours. Another words, instead of giving them one hour credit for showing up, give them an extra one hour credit for being a NECOS that day. It will increase your available NECOS's. The Net manager should also be more proactive when a member misses his/her assigned time for NECOS!!

Bill,
We give the NECOS, A/NECOS, Traffic Rep and A/TREP two hours credit and have been for years.
I'm not sure how much of an incentive it is to participate, but it is a nice reward for the extra effort.
We also give extra credit for running emergency power and submitting EEIs (actual or exercise).
Our total monthly participation runs from 850 to 1000 hours.

I Would like to share my experience with MARS membership. I filed all the relative paperwork, recieved a temporary call sign, got the training materials mailed to me and began reading the manuals. It stated that the best thing to do was to listen to the nets to hear the procedures in action. However, no where in any of the volumes of documentation that I recieved was there a net schedule that would allow me to do so. I searched the Florida Army MARS website and found no information there as well. I did stumble across an Air Force Net on 20 meters but that was it. I don't mind putting in the time to learn the material and participate, but there really doesn't seem to be reasonable direction.
It seems with the amount of documentation supplied there could be some real useful net information provided.

Mark,
I am sorry you had that experience. As far as I am concerned, the Florida staff failed you miserably.
The net information should have been given to you by the training officer and possibly others.

Who did you file with? In Washington Army MARS, the State Director processed these requests. Once the temporary callsign is assigned, the State Director informs the new member of the nets, frequencies, and times. We usually also assign an Elmer to assit the new member.

I returned my application and the supporting paperwork to the State directors office. I then received a packet from MARS Fort Huachuca, Arizona. It appears that this was copied back to the State director. I have had no further contact from anyone at the State level. My training callsign was issued on October 23.
I feel as if I was failed by the system. I already have substantial time invested and I don't know if I should continue or just cut my losses.

TO Mark, KI4AHO;
What was in your packet? Were you given frequencies and Net schedules? Have you pursued getting suitable antennas and any modifications needed for your equipment? Have you listened in on any nets to hear what is going on? Have you checked on the Army MARS website for info? Have YOU contacted anyone, via whatever means, and asked for help?
You'll have to start the process yourself.

I've been a member of AF MARS for over 20 years and I'm the SMD for Wyoming and Montana. I retired after 25 years of active duty Air Force in 1990. Most of my career was spent in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and they would not support MARS after the Vietnam War. Anyway, to the point, I do not have a large membership in my states and one of the reasons is a lack of a mission (goals and objectives for AF MARS). The Air Force gives very little support to MARS and the individual bases even less, which is unfortunate because I proved during an ORI in the late 80's that the base needed a MARS Base Support Team, but that's another story. To attract members, to keep members and to have an active membership there needs to be a well defined mission and a level of activity to keep members interested. Unfortunately, we don't have any of those things in AF MARS. I've argued this point for years all the way to the Chief, but it's not his fault that commanders do not see a need for a "bunch of volunteer civilians being in the their command and control chain." The military is not a democracy and the support for MARS has to come from the commanders, they have to perceive a need. They will not allocate facilities and scarce resources on their installation for something that they don't need and is not required. They will not encourage or allow their limited personnel to waist time “playing with us volunteers.” Much of this problem we brought upon ourselves 20 plus years ago by not being flexible to mission requirements and changing technology. I don’t have a lot of answers for all the problems, but until we have a well defined mission and guidance on how to accomplish that mission we’re going to continue to have problems. I’ve rambled on long enough, I guess we could all go to work for the Red Cross and Salvation Army, they still appreciate us. :-)
