Looking For Radio recommendations Reply

New to Army MARS and looking to purchase a new radio for a go kit. Any recommendations? I've been looking at the FT 897/957 and FT450.

The Alinco DX-70TH is a good option, and they can be had used for under $400. I have two of them.

Although bigger, the Kenwood TS-570 series is another excellent choice.

Well, you mentioned you wanted it for a go kit. I would suggest the Kenwood 480 and a decent 2M right (there are no 70CM freqs on MARS) or dualband rig, such as the Yaesu FT-8800.

I have the 857, 897 and the 450...love em.. But for portability if you want to stay Yaesu then the 897 is the ticket.
All mode HF-UHF, good general purpose rig.
With the bolt on LDG897 Tuner and a good battery pack makes a fine portable rig.
Modding is kinda of a pain so if you can get the vendor to do that for you. Harder than the 857/450 as the solder pads are REALLY small!

I've been using the FT-897 and have been happy with it. I bought it because of its versatility; all band/allmode, multiple power sources, grab and go.

a keenwood ts-50 is a great to go rig... and has asll the fetures you want for MARS ops. Small, works on 12 vdc and has an auto acc port, so you can use USB modes with the acc port. Icom and the rst do not have that option, and it is a nice option if you need it for a tnc or alike.

I have had one going for over 15 years, runs like the energizer bunny

I use a FT-897D with both Pactor III controller and soundcard interface in my Jump Kit. If this is what you are looking for, check the picture in my profile.

Stay away from the Kenwood TS-570,,,this is the
worst HF radio Kenwood has EVER built...
The guys that have them love,,BUT...they have
never had a radio with a GOOD RX. Just look at
the specs on the RX..and you tell me.
ANY other Kenwood would be fine..the TS-50 is a
good little rig as is the FT-857D.

I picked up a TS-450SAT from the Jackson, MS hamfest. It has optional CW and SSB filters. The rig does a great job, BUT - don't count on the auto tuner to be an asset out of band. I am very pleased with the rig's performance in every aspect and the fact that the tuner will not tune out of band isn't necessarily a bad thing. I turn off the auto tune function and use an external tuner. Apparently, it will still make full output.

With any rig having an internal autotuner, make sure it will operate out of band.
