Navy MARS Websites etc Reply
by W0DXZ on February 21, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
I have been quite disappointed in MARS websites. I find them hard to use, and many require a password, and you have no idea how to get that password.
Another thing, go to a MARS website, and try to get ahold of someone with a question,,, there is usually no way to do that,,, no "Contact Us" place, link.

Each section, each state, should have their own website, with readily available list of contact people. I am in AZ, if I wanted to contact via email, someone in this area, I would have a heck of a time doing it.

Also, though we rely on radio comms, each state should have an email list , of all hams , MARS members in the state. Iowa is very good about this, they have a kind of weekly emailing to all members, contaning N0ALL traffic, and other notes from the state leader. Great idea.

Sorry, I have been somewhat disappointed in the whole MARS system. No real emphasis on local activity (VHF)and that is where things are most needed, locally. I don't know, Im full of complaints, but MARS seems to be stuck in the Neutral Mode.
Go look at MARS websites, pretend you are new at MARS, try to find, contact a MARS member with questions via the website... Bob NNN0AFV

With all due respect, you haven't done much looking.

The name, address and phone number of every Navy MARS member is available to _MARS_Members_ in the Members section of the National Web page. From your post, it is obvious you haven't looked there. As for email addresses, most states DO maintain such a list, but it is difficult to keep it current - I know from experience

From the National site are links to the Area pages and Region pages, as well as individual state pages. Each state is responsible for its own web site; there is no requirement that such a site be maintained.

And yes, most of the information is password protected because member's personal information, operating frequencies and other information is confidential.

<< Iowa is very good about this, they have a kind of weekly emailing to all members, contaning N0ALL traffic,>>

Passing of traffic via email is a violation of NTP-8(D) and your SMD should not allow it. I KNOW it's a violation because I have personally argued at length with NNN0ASA over this and been slapped down repeatedly.

<< No real emphasis on local activity (VHF)and that is where things are most needed, locally. >>

Maybe where you are, not not generally. The emphasis in MARS communications is HF-long haul communications, and has been for years.

<< I don't know, Im full of complaints>>

And they should be taken to your SMD, not eHam.

<< but MARS seems to be stuck in the Neutral Mode. >>

No, MARS has a specific mission and everything is geared to that mission. If you want another mission, then maybe you need to look elsewhere, like a local ARES group.

Personally, this is a subject for your chain of command, not eHam.

I agree with you to a certain extent, the web site needs a little work. It should be laid out in a better manner, but for a 2nd generation web site it is pretty good. I look at it this way, the information is there, it may not stick out and you do have to dig it out, but it is there. I have seen some new 5th and 6th generation web sites that have a while lot les information, look great but no meat.
As for password, I think you are correct they should have a contact page that comes up with the password request, if you don’t know it you at least have someone to call. That is something a 3rd gen web site has, the 2nd gen did not have that ability. Each state and section should have there own web sit, BUT since this is a volunteer organization, some one has to cough up the cash it takes to do that, and a lot of the information is duplicated. Chief mars basically put the kibosh on state web site content, if the national page has it you can’t, so there is not much you can put up anymore. Most states really don’t need one anyway, what is state specific is on the national page anyway (but you have to dif it out).
E-mail lists MUST be released by each MAS member before you can post it, many do not want there e-mail addressees posted that is one reason why you don’t see to many.
Local anything is not been the MARS mainstay for many years, it’s all about long haul traffic, some states do have local VHF systems, but it is not used much. The old guard is still on HF and long haul, that is not bad, but I agree we should have local VHF system to compliment our HF systems. This may change, and some states are better than others, it takes time and volunteer money. That is where the rubber meets the road.

I just want to say that I am considering becoming involved in MARS now that I can say I am "retired" and I began researching MARS yesterday after hearing some of the CrossBand QSOs on Saturday. I began the search here on eHam as I was confident I would find some answers, but I finally checked the three sites.

Having served in the Army I began at the Army MARS site. Not very impressed. I continued with the Air Force site as my father has served in the USAF during its early days having been in the Army Air Corps. Then I checked out THE WEBSITE (my opinion) belonging to Navy-Marine Corps MARS. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! That's the site to go with. Links to almost anything one might need. I believe I can even apply on-line. Training material was readily available for downloading and I spent a few hours reading after putting it on my hard drive.

The best site has plotted my course to joining Navy-Marine Corps MARS rather than Army MARS as I originally thought would be my direction of travel. As for the AFCS site, blah. I don't want to enlist. Been there, done that. No real information on AF MARS.

Now I just have to be sure I am going to be able to meet the time requirements to make myself a useful asset and not another rusty nail in the bench.
