ATAS on a Ford Excursion or Superduty cab Reply
by N5QWA on October 29, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
Anyone have any creative installs of the ATAS on a Ford Excursion or Superduty Cab? I have seen a few for bumper mounts but am still looking.

Thanks,
Terry

The ATAS is a short, light weight antenna and even a simple trunk lip mount will suffice. These can also be attached to the lip of the hood. Don't expect "raving" performance from this antenna, especially on the lover bands where efficiency averages 1 or 2 percent.

I have been using an FT-100D (100W)and an ATAS-120 for the past 6 Months on my 1999 Ford Explorer and have been MORE than pleased with it's performance.
I have utilized an Diamond Antenna Lip Mount...mounted on the top portion of the rear passenger door behind the Driver, ensuring a good Ground and the coax is routed properly. I can work just about anyone I hear, and signal reports are usually a bit less at the other end if I'm working a Base with a Bean, but I've worked other mobiles with Outbackers, Ham Sticks and I have usually come out a few "S" units higher (whatever an "S" unit represents !!)
I have also used Ham Sticks mounted on the bottom side of the back Hatch Door and an Auto Tuner, and have been fairly successful.
I should drill a hole and mount the Antenna properly, but do not think I'd gain much advantage over the Door Lip mounting!
This is an excellent Forum and shows that Mobile HF is still a FUN part of the hobby.
