amp to rig problem Reply
by N4SXX on July 15, 2004 Mail this to a friend!

I have asked this question locally maybe the net persons can help.

I am running a ic-706m2G into a Hs-1800 and I want to put a ALS-500m in line but the rig has no relay input and as everyone knows this is almost required for any amp. At this time i am about to put the dang! amp into the box and put it on the shelf!! Please Please someone has to know the answer for this problem.
Thanks to all who read and help with this situation.

The IC706MkIIg does indeed have an output that can be used to key an amp. VSEND and HSEND on the ACC connector are both PTT inputs AND outputs that are pulled to ground when the radio is in transmit. Check out page 6 of the manual. These outputs are not rated to handle enough current to operate a relay directly, but they can operate a keying transistor (which can in turn operate a relay) or an optical isolator.

If you don't want to build an interface, then go to MFJ's web site and look at their interface. It requires an external 12 VDC. This can be pulled from the rig's accessory port, but I suggest you don't. Why? If the 12 V line ever gets shorted to ground, you're in for an expensive fix of the 706 internals.

By the way, the ALS-500 needs to be driven with no more than 60 watts or so, or you'll be replacing finals. This is about 5 or 6 on the HF power adjustment menu. The only built in protection is thermal. Nonetheless it needs to be well ventilated.

Fortunately I don't have this problem with my SG235/SG500 as the auto coupler provides a low current interface between the 706 and the amp. If you'd like to read more about it, check my web site.

Well, buddy, if you would have gone back and looked up the other sixteen places that you posted, you would have found this:

with these two links I posted:

The 706's will not key ANY amplifier "out of the box" except whatever Icom model(s) are made specifically for them.

If you are not technically inclined, go to the Ameritron website and check with them. I looked, and there is not a heck of a lot of info without fiddling around.

It looks to me like you need the PNP-13D adaptor cable, shown here:

http://www.ameritron.com/ameritron/products.php?catid=6

which connects to their ARB-704 relay box, at the bottom of the page.

The IC706 isn't very user friendly for interface. It REQUIRES a buffer or you will hose up something in the radio at worse, and not have it key properly at best.

Also please remember the 706 should not be driven into ALC on the display, regardless of what ICOM says. When you start registering ALC, the 706 gets pretty wide on SSB.

It is a really nice mobile rig, I have one myself and like it for my mobile operation, but because it is so compact it has shortfalls. That's just something you live with to keep size down.

As far as "reading the manual" since when is that a stupid answer? If you do or did read it, you would see the chart that lists the outputs/inputs for the 13 pin DIN/accessory connector, and you further would see that NOWHERE in those listings of the pinouts, or the other rear panel connectors, are there a listing for a PTT.

You WOULD, however, have seen that there is 13v out at pin 8, when the power is on, and pin 3, labled "hsend" is connected to 8v through a 2.2k resistance, and goes to ground when HF transmit.
