Trying to Identify a Tower's Make/Model Reply
by K0SDD on October 29, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I tried searching for any websites that might show examples of various tower sections, to allow for identifying make/model. But couldn't find any.

Do any of you know of one?

Otherwise, I will be taking some pictures of the sections and other pieces I have, and will get basic measurements, that may help in clarifying the tower make/model.

Thanks for any feedback.

I don't know of any one web page that shows & lists different towers. Take a tape measure, a 1/4" and a 5/16" open end wrench and measure the tower to post here.

If the tower you are looking at is a triangular tower with 3 legs with swaged ends it is likely a Rohn tower (a very popular tower).

Measure the diameter of the legs. Measure the cross bracing - Rohn makes two very similar towers - 20G light weight TV tower and 25G commercial and ham tower - They both have Zig Zag braces, and have the same EXTERNAL measurement of the tubular legs. but, here is where the open end wrenches come in - on Rohn 20G there are 7 horizontal 1/4" cross braces - on Rohn 25G there are 8 horizontal 5/16" cross braces - Use the open end of the wrench to see if it will slide over the solid rod cross bracing.

If it is 20G do not dismiss it as it can still be used but must be loaded much lighter than the 25G.

Rohn also makes 45G, 55G and some others even larger. These are not likely to be sitting in someone's back yard but you never can tell.

The other type tower you will find is Rohn's BX tower. It has flat folded legs and is a tapering design.

Failing all that - take a picture - post it to a website we can see and post the link here.
