Theodore Anderson Sr (WA2MGB)
Dec 4, 2001
WA2MGB was my father. He died on Dec 4, 2001. He received his General Class liscense in 1961. As a child I sat next to him and watched him talked to hams around the world using these "green radios" (Heathkits) he built. The neighbors hated ever time he went on the air in the 60's. He ran a pair of 4-400a's and knocked out TV for blocks (poor Lawrence Welk!). For years he wanted me to take up the hobby, but I had no interest. Decades later I finally got the bug. Unfortunately, by this time, his rigs were gone. And the only thing that remained was the base of his tower. I earned my General just months before he died. Using my station, built from boatanchors I got him on the air for one last time before he died. Interesting to note, my dad had the onset of Alzheimers and yet when I put him on the air... he could easily pound out 20 wpm. I recently took his callsign for sentimental reasons. I can still hear him calling CQ evertime I pick up my D-104 and fire-up my HW101. In closing, the Alzheimers gave him an odd sense of past and present mixing. Even as we fired up my rigs he still believed Heathkit, Drake, Collins, and Swan were churning out new rigs. Not a bad memory to leave this world by. Ted Jr. (WA2MGB)
