Bill Erickson (WA9TPQ)
December 10, 2002
The Society of Midwest Contesters lost a long time member, a great friend and an avid contester Tuesday, December 10 when Bill Erickson, WA9TPQ passed away at 1:10pm from the results of a stroke that occurred Sunday, December 8.
Licensed continuously since a teenager, Bill appeared very healthy and active and had just turned 50 last month. He loved contesting but his favorites were anything CW - especially SS and FD.

I will miss Bill and the friendly "chats" we had during many contests. I believe I first became acquainted with Bill during a 10-10 contest of all things. My prayers are with Bill's family as they work their way through this trying time. Soon may you remember only the good times.

I'm very saddened by this news.
Like many of you, I didn't know Bill personally, but TPQ is a call that I've put in my logs for many years. Heck, even before I knew that I'd be joining the SMC, when I was a damn "5" living in the Dallas, TX. area, Bill's call was a familiar one in both SS and NAQP's.
Bill is the kind of contester that I've always admired. Low key, always there, competitive, consistent. I don't know what obstacles he had to overcome to be so active, but I'm sure that they were many of the same
that we all face. Family, friends, job, other obligations.
I know that my logs will be 1 QSO lighter in the next NAQP and SS.

Our local hams will miss Bill. Bill was past-president of the Fox River Radio League. I suceeded him as president, and they were very large shoes to fill. Bill was a ham since high school and active every year of it. TPQ was instrumental in organizing the club's "HF CHALLENGE", an annual contest devised to increase activity in the club. Active in contesting, DXing, VHF and UHF, he was a ham's ham. He was a very giving person. If you needed help, equipment, advice, or just some egging to get a project finished he was there to lend a hand. He always had a kind word, a good handshake, and a great smile. Those of us lucky to be friends of Bill have lost a wonderful friend. Heaven now has a world class communicator.
