Ivan Morin (VE4IM)

Jan. 2, 2003

Manitoba Dxers and contesters were deeply saddened by the passing of Ivan VE4IM just after the new year 2003. Ivan had been suffering from a chronic lung disorder for the last several years but that did not keep him from being extremely active from his rural Manitoba location. He was a charter member of the Winnipeg DX Club and was the custodian of VE4AA, the club call. (The official club is no longer active.) A couple of summers ago Ivan told me that his lack of breath made it difficult for him to contest with SSB and that his HF amplifier was no longer working. But that wouldn't stop him ! I was glad to be able to lend him my old SB 220 (which he tweaked up!) and a Nel-Tek DVK100 voice keyer that allowed him to continue with his DX and contest activities. We worked occasionally in tests and I was always happy to see his call in the CQ WW or ARRL DX contest results. A quick scan of the RAC's 2000 "Canada Contester Award" competition showed him as being one of the most active HP contesters in the country, with 9 contests entered in that year, under the rules of the contest. Although I had not spoken to Ivan much in the past couple of years, I will remember that he was always willing to lend a hand, provide a DX tip, ask how I did in the latest contest and was a positive influence on everyone he encountered both on and off the air. VE4 land has lost a big signal and his passing will make that VE4 multiplier just a bit harder to get in the next DX test. VE4IM SK 73 OM. You will be missed. Rob Kaufmann VE4GV
