Charlie Castle (KD4GF)

Charlie was my elmer and at the time I did not even know it. He was the owner of the radio station I worked for in Florida and has quite a history in radio in its early days. When I first met him I thought he was the funniest old man I had ever met..Making fun of my boss from the previous radio station and like a true man for the people, He took me under his wing and gave me a job, Some purpose and a lot of laughs on the way. He had a condition that when he was excited he would fall asleep and he even use to kid about that...asking us to rate his jokes and if they were funny enough he would fall asleep. Back in the 80s when I worked for him at WAPR in Avon Park he tried getting me involved in ham radio but at the time I was a young radio announcer and more into the job and its fame and girls. Well after traveling for 8 years I returned to Florida to find him sick and sadly shortly after that he passed away, I will always remember him as my elmer......Thank you Charlie and Gods Speed.

Roy Davis wrote to me about charlie and here is what he had to say. "Scott, We told Charlie so many jokes and when standing his knees would buckle and he would almost get to the floor before he woke up and caught himself. He was such a good guy. His call was on our repeater for a long time before they put mine on it. I moved back home to Mississippi in 1983 and never saw Charlie again. He had many stories about ham radio and he was most always at the ham club meeting or he met us at "The Clock Resturant" where many more things were discussed and stories told. I am glad some of the things he told you stuck and you became a ham". Still no image has been found and I would ask the Amateur community to help in this endeavor....Thanks and 73
