Jay Altman (W2DX)
Jay was the consummate CW operator, able to carry on a detailed QRQ conversation. He knew how to use pauses, Q signals, and nuances to communicate effortlessly. Moreover, Jay was attuned to band conditions. I remember hearing his call in a QSO on 15 meters once. He was pounding brass with a South American station, but I couldn't hear Jay. I broke in and the SA op QSP'd my request to say hello. Jay immediately responded, and then heard my very faint CW groundwave (400 miles between us). I cranked up the RF gain and heard him---ever so faintly. We exhanged fast QSY info and carried on another band. So smooth. So easy. He always responded to my call with a warm greeting. I will miss him.

Thanks to Alex Mendelsohn for the kind words about my dad, Jay, W2DX who passed away last April.
Ham radio was his passion and I am sure he is still working on setting up a tri-band beam someplace.
