Ernest Copley (WA8BWN)

Ern was not only my Uncle who got me involved in Ham Radio, but a very good "friend".He started the fire in me to "tinker" with electronics and spent many hours helping me with my code so I could pass my novice test. That was in 1977? I am almost 47 yrs old while looking for some items on ebay, I came across a Knight T-60 for sale. The rush of emotions that flooded through me was overwhelming! Ern had given me a Knight T-50 for my first transmitter! That along with an old WWII aircraft receiver that he made a power supply for, I was on the air! My very first contact as WD8MJT?...My uncle Ernie. He helped me get my first order of QSL cards when I couldn't buy a Coke! They were bright orange with black lettering...nothing fancy. Todays twists and turns has ended me up here...why? I don't know. My call letters have been discontinued...I tried to renew, a few years back, but was one year beyond the grace period. I had moved away from Ern and never went beyond Novice. I don't feel I could ever be anything but Whiskey Delta 8 Mike Juliet Tango. I hope I haven't gotten too windy...a lot of emotions have came up that never had a release. Ern's sons and daughter knew of our relationship and when Ern passed they sent me his Heathkit HW-101 that I had helped him put together. I guess I might just get it out and see how bad it is maybe restore it....Thanks for letting me finally get out my grief and getting a chance to place his name so he won't be forgotten. 73 H.W.Rife WD8MJT
