Murray Wykes (W5NXD)
June 8, 1993
My Grandfather was the ultimate Ham. He was active in the installation of MARS, the military's version of Amateur Radio, used to make contact with Servicemen overseas. He spent years providing communications to missionaries abroad, keeping them in touch with families and friends. Active even after cancer took his larynx, continuing on with CW. I was told by family that just a few months before his death, he was up on the tower, making repairs to the antenna.
I was working on my career in the Navy when he died, so I didn't have the opportunity for him to be my Elmer. He is sorely missed.
