Eugene Tomer (WI6X)

July 2, 2007

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, Gene Tomer, WI6X. I had known Gene since 1979, when I was a young novice working 15m CW (he was KB5IQ/6 at the time). He was an Extra class ham, using a Heathkit HW-8 and we had regular QSOs on the Novice bands. We finally met in person and he ended up becoming my Elmer, as he had a PhD in Math and was 30 years my senior. We put up many antennas together. We lost touch after I graduated high school in 1980 and only re-established contact in 2004. I saw Gene a few times henceforth and even went out to the Golden Gate Bridge area and set up a QRP station. His health slowly declined thereafter and he lost his battle with cancer yesterday. I now think of all the fond memories and the knowledge he imparted. This tribute is to you, Gene. Thank you for being a wonderful friend and mentor. You had a huge impact on my life, especially as a vulnerable teen. I will miss you, buddy. Best 73, Ed NI6S
