Bill (KF8QK)

My uncle Bill was a super guy. Although interested in HF radio since the mid-50's he got his license a couple of years before I went to Korea on a USAF remote assignment in 1990. He told me to get my call back - I let my license expire - so we could keep in contact. The FCC told me that I would have to start at "ground zero" and take the Novice test. I was dissapointed but went through the process. I got my General license just as I left the states for Korea. After my arrival, we set up some schedules via MARS phone patches. I looked forward to my Saturday QSO's with him and my aunt Mary on ten meters. I would start calling for DX (my call was HL9EN) at 0730 local which was Friday evening in the US. Every five or six Q's, I'd give a call for Bill. Durning my time in Korea he never missed a schedule. He gave up every Friday night just to talk with me. Korea would have been a very lonely place without those weekly contacts. He helped my Dad set up an HF rig and we had many QSO's from my parents house. So due to him, I got my license back and we even started a family race to Extra. This was the spark that led my Dad (KB8LOV), Mom (KB8QLM) and brother (KB8MBL) into joining ham radio. After my time in Korea we had several QSO's and he would get my parents on the air. I've Elmer'ed around six people into the hobby since. So due in part to Bill's efforts there are at least ten (probably much more) hams enjoying this great hobby. 73 Bill, you are missed
