John W. Herb (W4CDU)
I first met John in 1973. He was Chief Engineer at the radio station I worked at. He encouraged me to get my First Phone commercial license, and taught me a lot about electronics. He and I remained good friends until his passing at age 92.
John was the best doggone engineer. He knew everything. Worked for Western Electric during WWII on lots of top secret stuff. Licensed as a Ham in 1935, John was on the cutting edge of computers, packet, and the digi modes. We corresponded by letter, phone and email over the past 15 years, and we visited him a number of times in Ocala.
I got a brick for him at ARRL HQ. We miss you, OM. God Bless... 73 de N9PTG
