Harold Humphrey (W9AVM)
Oct 8, 1974
My dad and my elmer, Harold from Madison, WI was first licensed in 1926 as 9CPA. He was issued W9AVM later when calls were re-issued. He was an avid cw operator in the 30's and 40's. He was a cw instructor for the Navy during WW2 at UW Madison. I remember sitting for hours watching him grind crystals, build homebrew rigs, or just operate the radio. He was elmer to many newcomers and the bug bit me at age 12. Dad bought me a cw oscillator and I was on my way. Even though many years have passed, I still miss hunting and fishing trips and all the qso's we had over the years across the miles. Now I am the proud "owner" of W9AVM, making it heard around the world once more. 73 dad
