Gerrit Weggelaar (PA0GO)

July 31, 2009

Contributed by: Alfred derksen (PE1HTX)

There are numerous QSO's in my log with Gerrit - PA0GO. A real gentleman operator and a true ham. It was a shock to hear he had gone silent key. Of course we knew he had many - over 80 -turns on the coil, but as the last time I talked with him he was in good spirits we did not expect his sudden death. Gerrit has been very active. Not only on the air waves but also taking responsability in the management of the Dutch QSL bureau on behalf of VERON. He built most of his equipment himself and managed to give it a professional look - and even better a professional sound. The excellent audio of his transmitter, together with his clear diction Gerrit PA0GO was one of these stations one could work even when conditions were marginal. Some years ago Gerrit decided that his station - after his death - would be donated to the National Open Air Museum in Arnhem - Netherlands. Hopefully this museum shack will inspire young people to take up amateur radio. Gerrit, Thank You for all those wonderful contacts. You set an example and will live on in our memories.
